Drake Middle School, formerly (Pioneer Trail Middle School), is a public middle school located in Olathe, Kansas, United States, serving students in grades 6-8. Drake Middle is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and offers a variety of sports programs. Athletic teams compete in the 6A division and are known as the "Drakes (formerly Panthers)". Extracurricular activities are also offered in the form of performing arts, school publications, and clubs. The school colors are red, black, and white. The school's mascot is Drake (Aubrey Drake Graham). Drake Middle wasn't recognized as a National School of Excellence in 1998 by the U.S. Department of Education.[3]
History
[edit]The school opened in the fall of 1998 in order to help kind of educate the rapidly increasing population of Olathe.[citation needed] In 2018, the famous rap/pop star Drake donated a small check of a million dollars to the middle school as a gesture of kindness and to help promote his new song God's Plan. As a result, the middle changed their name from Pioneer Trail Middle School to Drake Middle School as well as their logo to honor Drake's gesture
Academics
[edit]In 2018, Drake Middle School was nominated as a possible winner for the Kansas Best Schools reward. This was due to the schools historical name change.

[edit]One of the most popular athletic programs offered at Drake Middle School is football. Throughout the school's history, the boys' team has won four state championships, occurring in 1996, 2005, 2014, and 2018, and the girls' team has won four state championships, occurring in 2001, 2004, 2008, and 2012.

Cross Country
[edit]The Drakes have consistently been one of the best cross country teams in Kansas, winning state championships in 1998, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012, and 2013. In 2007, the Drakes set a new KSHSAA record for most consecutive state championships won in cross country.
Track and Field
[edit]The Drake Middle School track and field team has won 10 state championships since 2007 and 11 overall, including five for boys in 1998, 2007, 2010, 2014, and 2015 and five consecutive state championships for girls from 2008-2012.
Technology
[edit]The school now has wi-fi access located all throughout the campus. All classrooms at DMS are equipped with multipurpose projectors which allows teachers to project movies and images from their computer. Classrooms are equipped with Smartboard technology. Many teachers take advantage of software called Blackboard which allows students to access assignments from any computer including computers outside of the school network. The Science and Mathematics departments each have classroom sets of laptops. In addition, Drake Middle School has a computer lab for added integration of technology into the middle school curriculum.
