User:Tinucherian/Incredible Indians
Project Name : Incredible Indians
Start Date : 7 May 2013
End Date : TBD
Idea: The project was originally named as "Improve Indian Biography Images Project and re-named to "Incredible Indians" as suggested my friend, Mathew Alexander.
The strategy is to use your influences to persuade people to donate their images to Wikipedia/Creative Commons. If there are any possibilities of meeting them, take pictures and upload them.
Objective :
- Better images of Notable Indians & celebrities to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
- Improve the awareness of releasing the images to free licenses and Creative Commons.
Completed
- Ashwin Sanghi, author — Persuaded to change licenses of the images on Flickr to CC by SA. Uploaded to Wikimedia Commons Category:Ashwin Sanghi
- Amish Tripathi, author — Released 4 images on CC by SA. Uploaded to Wikimedia Commons Category:Amish Tripathi . OTRS completed.

How can You donate your images to Wikipedia?
The images are uploaded to Wikipedia's sister project, the media repository, Wikimedia Commons, so that it can be used across Wikimedia projects including Wikipedia. Images from Wikimedia Commons are not just used by Wikipedia, but also by major news publications, websites, bloggers etc.
You can donate the images that you hold the copyrights only and not published elsewhere as copyrighted.
You need to release these images to Wikipedia with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 (CC-BY-SA) License.
Do note that the license is not limited to Wikipedia or related sites.
While you might hold the copyrights of the images technically, it is also important to get signed consent of the actual photographer for transfer of the rights, if we are going especially via the OTRS route.
If someone instructs or pays another to take his photo, who holds the copyright? the photographer or the subject?
In legal terms, it is always the photographer who is the copyright owner. The photographer should transfer the copyright by a contract or written terms if the subject needs to have the copyright. In most cases, it sound stupid, but that's how the law is written.
There are two ways by which we can complete the process.
1) You can upload the images to flickr website yourself (account in your name), change the license to CC-BY-SA (including Commercial) and inform me with links to the images. I can upload them to Commons using the Flickr upload tool.
2) You can send me the images by email ( tinucheriantinucherian.in ). I will then upload them to the Wikimedia Commons. You will need to reply with the standard format for the grant of permissions, which will be forwarded to the OTRS admins (I will guide you in this procedure). An OTRS volunteer will later check the email in OTRS to verify that all is well with the permission sent by the author and complete the process.
Notes
- The project aim to get more images of Notable Indians into Wikipedia & Wikimedia Commons.
- I am doing this as a Wikipedia volunteer with the intention of getting a better coverage and representation of India on Wikipedia.
- I will not accept any favours or remuneration for doing this or any edits to the Wikipedia articles.
- I will not remove any controversies/negative statements if any ( now or future) from your Wikipedia article, unless it is blatantly false and not referenced by any reliable new sources.
