IBM 1460 is a released in 1963[1] more advanced version of the IBM 1401, and this model came out with twice the performance - only 6 microseconds per cycle. And with it, the record-breaking IBM 1403 Model 3 printer, incredibly fast even by today's standards. He gave out 1100 lines of text per minute[2].
Hardware
[edit]The main system:[3]
- IBM 1441 Processing Unit
- IBM 1461 Input-Output Control
- IBM 1447 Console, Model 1, 2, or 4
The IBM 1460 can be equipped with:[3]
- Output:
- Storage:
- Other options: IBM 1009 Data Transmission Unit, IBM 1011 Paper Tape Reader, IBM 1012 Tape Punch, IBM 1419 Magnetic Character Reader, IBM 1418 Optical Character Reader, IBM 1428 Alphameric Optical Reader, IBM 1448 Transmission Control Unit[4] (control data transfers for the IBM 357, IBM 1030, IBM 1050, IBM 1060).
Compatible systems
[edit]This model has a full compatibility with IBM 1401 instructions, and has an additional instructions for disk storage support[5].
The system also could run on an IBM System/360 model 40 using "1460 emulation mode", but with the loss of this feature when the IBM System/360 model 50 computer was installed, it had to be reprogrammed[6].
