JoAnn Seghini (1937-2020) was an American politician who served as Mayor of Midvale for 20 years. She was the first woman in Midvale to be elected to public office.[1] In 1998, she became the first woman elected mayor of Midvale, Utah[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Seghini was born in 1937. Her family moved to Midvale in 1938. She graduated from Jordan High School, and got a batchelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Utah. Eventually she got a master’s in curriculum development and then her doctorate in educational psychology.[3]
Career
[edit]She taught elementary school for 12 years, and spent 14 more years in education as an administrator.[3]She was Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Staff Development at Jordan District at the time of her retirement in 1998, when she was elected mayor. Before running for mayor, she served 3 terms on the Midvale city council. She was elected to city council in 1986.[4] During her tenure as amyor, Midvale cleaned up its superfund site.
Personal life
[edit]She married Robert Louis Seghini in 1963. They had two sons, and later divorced.[5]
