The Wheeling Fire Department provides emergency services to the citizens and visitors of the city of Wheeling, West Virginia. The department is staffed by trained, professional firefighters and firefighter/paramedics who perform fire suppression, heavy and technical rescue, emergency prehospital care and transport, and various non-emergency services including fire investigation, fire prevention, and community safety education.
Mission Statement
[edit]The current mission statement of the Wheeling Fire Department:
"The mission of the Wheeling Fire Department is to limit the loss of life and property resulting from fire, medical emergencies and environmental disasters. The Department fulfills its major service responsibilities through separate but related divisions: Emergency Response; Fire Prevention; Education; and Investigation. The Wheeling Fire Department also responds to calls that are considered non-emergency calls; water main breaks; customer assistance and interdepartmental assistance. We strive to effectively and efficiently utilize all of the resources at our command to provide a product deemed excellent by our citizens and visitors. The members of the Wheeling Fire Department believe that pride, the pursuit of excellence and commitment to public service is of paramount importance."[2]
Staff
[edit]The department is staffed by 95 full-time firefighters. All firefighters have the following minimum required training:
- West Virginia State Firefighter Certification
- EMT-Basic
- Hazardous Materials Operations
Organization
[edit]The department is divided into three platoons (A Platoon, B Platoon, and C Platoon), each consisting of the following units:
- One duty chief
- Six engine companies
- One ladder company
- One rescue company
- Three paramedic units (squads)
Non emergency divisions include:
- Bureau of Fire Prevention
- Fire Investigations
- Training Division
- Maintenance Division

- Station 2 - District: Entire city. Companies: Rescue 1, Squad 1.
- Station 4 - District: South Wheeling. Companies: Engine 4, Squad 3.
- Station 5 - District: Wheeling Island. Companies: Engine 5.
- Headquarters - District: North Wheeling, East Wheeling, Center Wheeling, Downtown business district, Western half of Fulton neighborhood. Companies: Engine 2, Ladder 1
- Station 9 - District: Warwood neighborhood. Companies: Engine 9.
- Station 10 - District: Woodsdale neighborhood, Pleasanton neighborhood, Oglebay Park, Wheeling Park, Claytor neighborhood, Eastern half of Fulton neighborhood. Companies: Engine 10, Squad 2.
- Station 11 - District: Elm Grove neighborhood. Companies: Engine 11.[3]
