Legislative elections were held in the Republic of Indonesia on 27 May 1997, to select 425 of the 500 seats of the People's Representative Council (DPR). The election was the seventh legislative elections since Indonesian independence and the sixth (and last) legislative elections under the New Order regime of president Suharto. The election resulted in a clear victory for Golkar, which won its best result, gaining 43 seats. Meanwhile, the Islamic United Development Party (PPP) gained 27 seats. The nationalistic Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) on the other hand, saw its worst performance yet, losing almost 80% of its seats and vote share.
