USS Nevada
I'd say yes, especially after looking at the other well-written articles on the topic (they don't have it and it doesn't seem to be a detriment to not have it). I'd also say that the article is lacking a bit with regards to being a GA. For what I mean, you might want to take a look at USS Texas (BB-35) and the articles on the Iowa class battleship including the individual ships of that class. Also, make use of DANFS as much as you can since it is public domain text, also citing it properly using {{Cite DANFS}}. I'd review the article for GA but I've contributed lightly to the article which rules me out. -MBK004 18:34, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

It's not online as far as my knowledge. It's in a book that's about 25 years old which covers every single US battleship ever built. USS Nevada (BB-36)
As i said originally, i liked your proposed DYK hook for USS Nevada (BB-36) and I liked your development of the article. And DANFS is a fine source, there is no need to come up with hooks based on difference sources. The issue for DYK is about whether the article is new, and how that can be evaluated given that the DANFS text originally incorporated in the article was not identified by quotes. I was willing to argue for carving out a DYK policy exception to allow articles like this one to be accepted, but I am not willing to get into an argument about it with MBK. I think MBK did not really read what i wrote, and/or is unfamiliar with DYK policy, so I think MBK misinterpreted what i was suggesting. But especially with apparent opposition i don't think any exception policy will be carved out. So I think you simply don't get DYK for the article.
Also, I made a suggestion about DANFS sourcing in the GA review for the article. As MBK notes in response there, it is not currently wikipedia policy to disallow DANFS paste-ins without specific crediting of wording (as would be provided by using quotes). But there are differences of opinion about whether that should be policy, and for articles to reach FA status it is my opinion that no general disclaimer should be allowed. If you are actually interested in the topic you could browse the varied opinions expressed at Wikipedia talk:Plagiarism and discussions linked from there. Ah, yes. I forgot about that, thanks for the reminder! I'll try to help out more often now, but all I can do is to shorten the plot, as well as taking out some of the more irrelevant (I hope) information to make it more concise and to the point. That's because most of what I can do is already done by you, and I doubt that I can do anything better! But I agree with the review that the plot generally needs some fixing; in terms of MoS, that is. But if you think I deleted some important info, please feel free to add it back. How much of the article is from your source that you put there? Just so that you know, virtually every class through the Colorado Class could trace every design element directly back to the Nevada Class and all were designed as slow, armor heavy, gun heavy, with state of the art fire control, intended (stated or not) to sail across the pacific and back with battle damage. Jackman did the much later Wolvie, after "Elegy" & the Wendigo story, not the early one. I do disagree with Chris & John's making him psycho, tho; bad-tempered would have done it nicely.) Upset she's brought back? No, more that she died. What burns me up is they couldn't leave an honorable death alone. The only reason Marvie stayed dead is 'cause the book wasn't selling.... When X-Men was at 600K/mo, could Marvel resist reintroducing the original gang? Not a chance. (Borrowing Rachel for it was a slim chance, seeing how well she fit in the X-verse. Her, Kitty, & 'yana were a perfect trio. And she had her mom written all over her, which is one reason I liked her so much.) I do wish Chris had thought a little harder about "DoFP", tho. He could've fixed Jean's death EZ. If Shooter'd allow it, which I don't know enough to say... (Neither am I completely sure I'd've wanted him to bring her back, then. "reads comics too often"? Sanderson was around a bit, but nothing like T. M. Maple, who'd turn up in LCs almost every month in at least two books (probably more, I only read a couple regularly); I never got a letter published once. (I don't think I wrote more than one, either.) Also, I've got a long lead on you. I got "Elegy" & Fist 15 & the first PowerFist new on the racks. (I've got a complete set of Fist readers, & a complete run of new X-Men from Giant #1 past the end of the Brood Saga, around 260, when greed & grim started getting to me. I'd have a complete run of the Milestones, too, but they were so hard to find...)
Never read comics? You don't know what you missed. OK, it's not the same now (boy, I sound old, huh?), but JLI still makes me laugh (& I've reread 'em half a doz times) ("I should never come out in the daytime."); the New Xmen, Fist, & the Mutants were as real to me as Jubal Harshaw or Paul Atreides; Santana still grabs me (& Tim could give lessons on how to create a credible fictional world); Monday (intro as a backup in Snout, later a major player before War Shaman) intrigues me; Static was about 30 years overdue (& a superb foil for Spidey in his prime); & I will defend Alan & Dave's Watchmen as literature to anybody. (I got most of the 12 off the rack before I got the graphic novel as a gift.)

"Oh...?" I suspected as much. I can't help think of the 3 of them as I knew them (which is pretty well). Kate & 'yana were best pals almost from the very start (after 'yana's time in Limbo; have a glance at her page). Rachel was of an age, too, & after coming from a dismal future ("DoFP"), got an opportunity to be "just a girl" for a change. (As much as any X-man did, to be sure.) They were cut from the same cloth, those 3, & written by Chris (who I was a fan of until the grims started taking over; I think he was getting tired). That trio was so perfect, I can't picture Chris breaking it up for X-Factor (tho strictly I don't think he had final say, since I don't think he owned them, Marvel did).
Haven't seen JLTV; I can't get interested in the 'toons (tho I understand Bats is excellent & if you like JLTV, I recommend it, on the word of somebody's opinion I trust). If you're going to start with any comics, JLI, the Milestones, & Watchmen are a must. They will, however, spoil you for most of the other crap. The early New Xmen are really good; the Phoenix Saga is the 2d best-written serial story I've ever seen, on a par with Watchmen, which gets the nod IMO because Alan & Dave created it whole cloth, while Chris had some backstory & the MU to rely on. (Start at 99, stop after 137; you can skip the Annuals.) Scout is a bit of an acquired taste; I'd skip the first 6 & start at 8 or 9, then go back after you've read 2-3 ish if you want the origin story. (I dislike origin stories, besides.) Don't try War Shaman or Swords of Texas first; WS is too dependent, & SoT is a bit...idiosyncratic if you haven't the backstory. If you lean more to fantasy (& Elfstones suggests it), look for the Pinis' EQ; fantasy doesn't get any better. Or have a look at Groo, which is as lunatic & funny as it gets. (Let me know if you figure out what Mark Evanier does. :D)

On Bats, maybe you do have to be younger, or have to have a particular attitude; the recommend is from a guy in his 20s, & I trust his judgment. (If he said "Read this", I'd look at it. We do disagree on manga, but his steers have been good in more mainstream stuff.) And to add one more I forgot, if you're interested in detective, look for Mike Grell's Sable; just watch out for the leprechauns. And try not to let the moose see you. =] (That's an extremely inside joke. Sorry.)
And just to be real clear (if I wasn't) on Jean, I had close to 4yr (from Giant 1 to "Elegy") to get familiar with her & the gang. (I never read but 1 of the original X-men, coincidentally the very one featuring the same baddie who got me reading the new ones in ish 98!) Her death was a shock, esp since nobody ever really dies in comics (unless, as noted, the book isn't selling). What's the only thing that can kill Supes? Yep, it ain't kryptonite. Hope you enjoy, regardless. Sable as "detective" is maybe not the best term (but the 1st one to come to mind); have a look at the linked page & judge, 1st. It's the least superheroic book I ever read, a kind of Batmanesque thing.
Do yourself one favor. If you do start on the comics, just read to enjoy. You might be able to get collectibles, but it'd be decades before they're worth anything, if ever, so don't bother with the specialty stores unless you really want a particular ish. (I filled out my run of Fist that way, just to have 'em all, but I wouldn't again.)
I've wavered between the idea of leaving characters (esp baddies) dead & liking a really inventive "miraculous survival" story. My fave is Doc Oc surviving a nuclear accident because he wraps his arms around himself as he hides, 'cause they were originally designed to handle nuclear materials & so were innately protective. (Most aren't near so good...& if I see another teleport ring, I'll scream.) I don't know if John got to leave Supes dead or not, I never read the book, but I'd be very surprised if a change in writer doesn't have the ol' Big Blue Cheese back in the tights in nothing flat. (That's all it takes to get an old baddie back...)
On Holmes, have you seen PBS' broadcasts? I think Jeremy Brett is perfect for it. And I particularly liked Meyer's 7% Solution. (The movie is a bit too "Adventures of Sigmund Freud, featuring Sherlock Holmes" for me. Of course, when you cast Alan Arkin as Freud, & Nicol Williamson as Holmes, this should be no surprise...) I also liked the "remixes" Max Headroom did (30 minutes until the 20th Century?), taking the original stories & weaving them together: Irene Adler as an agent after the Bruce-Partington plans, for instance, was a very nice touch. And I think the treatment of Watson in "Sherlock Holmes in New York" was the best; if they weren't more nearly equal, why did Holmes put up with him? I haven't read all the originals, so maybe I missed something.The premise of "Young Sherlock Holmes" appeals to me, even tho it violates the canon, 'cause it'd explain the (seeming) paradox. Of course, Holmes admittedly admired Watson's courage (as I recall)...& it's just possible Doyle meant for Watson to be keeping a medical eye on Holmes' addiction, tho given the attitude to cocaine at the time (even in medicine), that'd be a long shot. If you're getting Detroit Ch56 PBS in UP (as I presume), you should be able to get BBC's Holmes with Brett Saturday nites (except in Pledge Weeks, like now). (How do I know? It's on cable here.)
I lean to survivals, too, but good ones are exceeding rare; of the ones I've seen (& I've seen my share!), only Doc Oc's was really good. Byrne pulled an interesting one with Jamie, but he was using it to bring in a baddie, so it was a bit wasted. And I tried coming up with a good one myself for Fist once; I'm not so sure a psychic imprint on the tiger amulet passes as "good"...but I do like it better than buying a substitute (which is what Byrne did).

"survivals" I think what bugs me the most is how little effort seems to go into most of them. Can it be so hard to study the character a little? Exploit his/her existing powers! Klaw (for instance, offhand) could encase himself in solid sound & resist part of a building falling on him. A "death" doesn't have to be permanent, either. I think of Beetle or Hobgoblin: beaten badly, buried under a fallen building, just barely managing to crawl out after stripping off wrecked equipment, & coming back, not with the same old gear (which is usual), but rejuvinated & improved (which more/less applies to both of them). From what I can tell, most of the deaths are a book's writers not liking a character, or being bored with them. (That's why Gwen Stacy got thrown off a bridge & Spidey couldn't save her. {You do know who he is, don't you? =]} It's still a puzzle to me how "super zhlub" manages to get such hotties, tho.)
Getting out of a tough corner is a measure of how good a writer is, & given the size of the MU, the number of baddies, & the number of escapes from seemingly airtight prisons, it can't be too hard to find hidden caches, secret hideouts, or mysterious benefactors, or have fans believe them. A last-second rescue from a burning Harrier would've done Nefaria just as well as a teleport ring, & been more credible, & it could've opened more story possibilities, not least clones of Thunderbird or a baddie spin on Logan (or Human Fly).
In the same vein, I'd love to see Iron Man meet up with a bunch of his top old baddies (not all at once, mind you...) & just hand 'em their heads, not even raising a sweat, & say, "I beat you before. Several times. Did you think I forgot how? Stay in prison."--& force the writer to come up with new ways to use the existing gear, or leave them gone. That makes it hard on the book's writer, but I think it also makes things more interesting. In balance, I'd do something raised in an IM LC years ago, & give IM experimental gear that doesn't work. Make him fight with his brain instead of his muscles (or armor, in this case). Give me writing duties on IM for a year, you wouldn't recognize the book when I was done. Of course, some of why it stays the way it is is driven by sales...& I can just picture them tanking if things got done my way. ;D Still, given you can't take Tony out of the yellow & gold (or for long, anyhow), & given you've got to have fights (is that in the Code?), it's still possible to avoid the "same old same old". (Also, I take the "invincible" seriously.) It does raise questions over use of other people's, & other titles', characters; outside Amazing, I haven't seen much crossover, & that's Marvel's flagship book. IM could handle it; IMO, he could be the most international hero Marvel has, & could very easily tap Marvel GB/Marvel Europe characters, & make use of the overseas fan base for locales & ideas. He doesn't have to be the "ugly American" (tho he often, even usually, has been).

For a long time comic book reader, I guess that would be annoying—but for me, all of those escapes seem cool, jus tbecause I haven't seen any of them before! =D Rejuvenated and improved would be fun; sorta like rail fans when Union Pacific 844 goes into the shop to be repaired...and then she comes out, just like new. Same thing but backwards with the SS United States; there are many people who wish and pray that she will be "reejuvenated and improved" (I'm one of them!) but it just (in all likelihood) is not going to happen. =(

Well, it's more interesting to me just because no one in my family is interested in comic books, not even my 2nd cousins. My dad has always been interested in trains (when we went on an odyssey to Chicago, we had to take half of two days to go "trainwatching." =] I didn't mind though, it was kinda fun!)...though my love of novels I got on my own...I have like 40-50 novels at home including all of the Ryanverse novels (except for The Hunt for Red October) in hardcover, and the first 14-15 ish novels of Shannara. Also, (if you are looking for a good book) I found Off Armageddon Reef to be a surprisingly excellent...or if you like a scary thriller, the best I have ever read by far is Relic...the movie (from what I hear) sucked, but the book keeps you on your toes...don't read it a 2-3 in the morning and then go into your pretty dark basement to take a shower...(like I did)...freaked me out, even though I am/was 17 and knew that nothing wasw going to happen...=D lol! If you're a trainfan, have a look at this. (There's also planes & trucks, if you're inclined. I signed up at PSW, myself, but don't get there nearly often enuf.) It's a wiki, like WP, & if you've got a spare minute, they'd probably appreciate you copying & pasting articles from WP (tag it {{from Wikipedia}} & paste above that). Or do a bit of editing. Like WP, every little bit helps.
I'm less a completist on Ryan, & I'm not a big fan of hardcovers (PBs are easier to handle & read), but I think I've read 'em all (except the very newest, haven't got to it yet). Can't say I liked Shannara; tried Sword & just couldn't get into it. Nor Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, tho I finished the collection (1v). I'm more a Deryni or Xanth type. Somebody said once there's 2 kinds: those who read Red Planet & those who read The Hobbit. I had gone thru Red Planet & The Duelling Machine before I ever heard of Tolkien. ;D And if you took out the magic, Kurtz's would perfectly good historicals, they just drip with period-type detail. Don't think I've even heard of Relic (sorry, but your link goes a bit wrong =]), but it sounds interesting, & I'll have a look for it. Like creepy? Just 1 word: Lovecraft. He tops the "creepy" list in most of the informal polls I've seen. (I confess, I haven't tried him, but I liked "Witch Hunt', the Dennis Hopper film version) Heard of Reef, but haven't seen it, so I'll have a glance. I tend more to stuff like Bova's Privateers & the Duelling Machine, or Icerigger, Nor Crystal Tears, or 1 of the most intriguing settings I've ever seen, Sentenced to Prism (all by ADF), or just about anything Heinlein (Glory Road, no), & for me, David Gerrold has taken RAH's place in the pantheon.
I think generally you're right, it's the fights that sell for most fans, but in Xmen, I always liked the "days off" stories best, where they get to be just people. I don't think you could drop the fights entire (not when the fan base for comics generally avg 10yr olds, over 90% boys), & I don't suggest there wouldn't be an IM (just not Tony); from the previous attempts at it (& there have been at least 3-4 I can think of), it hasn't gone over well. I'd try it, if only to try & get inside what makes him want to be IM to begin with. What has he given up for it? Is it worth giving up having a life, to be a hero? Do you have to? (Spidey doesn't. Clark seems to think so (but Lois may have something to say about that... =]). I'd probably end up putting him back in the suit, but for, oh, 12-18 ish, I'd want to look at the man in the armor, for a change. (the other) Robbie Robertsonstop the presses! I like PBs better too (except for the crease that they tend to get in the spine) but I got all of the hardcovers for free on Christmas from a family friend....yeah, I was happy. =D Don't give up on Shannara—yes, Sword was a 'long, hard slog', but try The Elfstones of Shannara...that is, by far, my favorite book anywhere...starts off with a quick battle scene somewhere, and then Brooks builds tension albeit kinda slowly) culminating with about 4-5 giant battle scenes...it's just awesome...you've got to try it. =D Relic wasn't a huge novel...but I found it on a Pamida shelf and bought it...it was very good. And who cares about the link--you found it, didn't you?? =)

My first pass at Parker's Godwulf Manuscript (after seeing no hat, no trenchcoat), I didn't like it; after A Catskill Eagle made me laugh more than any detective novel ever, I went back & started over, & I'm glad I did. Ditto Pronzini's Nameless. (If you're thinking this is an advert for them, you're right. ;D)
I liked the days off stories at the time, tho I'll agree I was a bit older than the average then. Nor do I count myself typical. When I was ten, I was reading the tripod novels & Run Silent, Run Deep, & I'd read Dune, Stranger in a Strange Land, & Silent Victory before the end of Gr8. I remember being more interested in the gadgets & the way powers worked than in the fights, too, 'cause I was already thinking I'd love to write for Marvel. (Never managed it, tho...) Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike a well-staged fight scene. I didn't watch "Revenge of the Ninja", "Marked for Death", & "Lone Wolf McQuade" for the stories. Or the acting. ;) (I did start watching "Buffy" because of the cast, tho. ;D "X-Files", too. =])
Thinking of Tripods, let me ask. Do you remember novels by Larry Sloboda (or Svoboda) with an alien, where color was always involved somehow? I liked them a lot when I was much younger, but I'm damned if I can recall a title now. How about a detective-type novel dealing with WW1 fighters called Indigo Blue? An SF book, Ark of Venus? Anything with a car builder & piano player Arnek "Arnie" Tasjian, who had a cousin (or an uncle) who was a pro racer? An Armenian guy (I think), a truck driver who didn't want to be named "tank driver" before he took up sports car racing (in, if you can believe it, a +4+)? You're nearer the age to have read these recently, tho they're all pretty old. They're all juvenile/teen novels, & any leads on who wrote 'em would be very welcome. J. J. I was not typical...I read odd books, like U.S. Navy books when I was ten/eleven-ish, including the 1,026 page The United States Navy in the Pacific during World War II...that's how I learned to skip-read though! I'm going to read Dune when my friends are done with it.....watched them just for the girls? Nice! The first (serious) TV show I watched ever was either Star Trek: Voyager or The West Wing (don't remember which).......I'm a sad individual, I know. Quite the loner, actually...we lived out in the boonies for the first 13 years of my life; this coupled with me not having any friends didn't help the socializing...the only thing that saved me was moving right into the middle of this place...even if it was small, being in the middle forced me to get friends...it helped. That's also why I started reading other stuff, like Shannara and Sherlock Holmes! =D

I started watching 'em because of Charisma & Gillian. I thought BTVS was a stupid idea, 'cause the movie was such a piece of shit, & I was sure "X-Files" would be, too (geez, searching for ETs?). It was half a season of 1st-season repeats & eye candy before I realized BTVS was really well written (& about 3 full seasons before I figured out how good Sarah was, & how the show wouldn't work if she wasn't ;D I still think Cordelia's too shallow to have layers, tho. =]). It only took me a couple of shows to see Gillian was more than just a (very) pretty face, & the writing was really good there, too. And their relationship was a treat. ("Must be fate, Mulder.") Then they had to blow it...
Dune. You will not regret it. It's epic, it's so thoroughly prepared it reads like an encyclopedia (which is what Herbert wanted). It's a virtual textbook on creating a fictional society & ecosystem. It probably introduced more people to the idea of "ecosystem" & "environmentalism" than Silent Spring (how many people actually read that?). Then do yourself a favor. Pretend it's not part of a trilogy & ignore the half-dozen bad sequels, prequels, spinoffs, & assorted garbage. Do not, on pain of madness, see this.
USNWW2. Is that the 1v condensed Morison? I think I've read it, too. SV is a must for anybody interested in the Pacific War; it'll make you think twice about how important any of the famous battles were.
If you started serious TV w "ST:V", you didn't do too badly. (I prefer DS9, 'cause it's more character driven, but "ST:V" is closest to Gene's original vision for TOS. And despite the really good cast on DS9, STTOS was a better show. It was tighter & didn't drag, where STNG, STV, & DS9 sometimes seemed to.) And "West Wing"? It is one of the best shows ever to get on TV. End of argument, don't even try to convince me otherwise. That, "HSB", "Badge 714", & "The Jack Bauer Diaries" (&, for me, first season "Murder One") top the list. Watch those, they'll spoil you for much else, 'cause you've seen the best it can get. IMO, they all broke new ground, one way or another.

"X-Files" surprised me (until the last couple of seasons, with the move back to L.A. &, IIRC, contract disputes with David). BTVS was a stunner, it was so good, compared to the movie, & it's on my Top 20 of Best TV Ever, for treating horror seriously (but with humor) & women as capable (something SF's been doing in print since the '50s, but Hollywood's just catching on to...)
When I say "drag", I mean individual episodes, not the series proper. I thought "ST:V" casting was a bit weak, but I did like Kate (ever since the man in white, & she did "Ryan's Hope" which my mom was a fan of, I remember), & casting Tim Russ was a nice touch. "ST:V" did the "boldly go" better than anybody, but I got pretty tired of Seska & Kazon. The Hirogen intrigued me, & much as I hated him for most of the run, The Doctor was conceptually really interesting. (I'd rather they'd gone nearer De Kelley in casting & Vic Fontaine in execution.)

I think "West Wing" proves smart TV about politics can succeed, when it's done well. I'd watch reruns in preference to just about all the new stuff on now. Except "24". (Seeing Kiefer smile on that show is deeply weird. I never liked him in anything before, but I can't picture anybody better for Jack.)
What really drives me crazy is, all the people in charge on "24" (writing staff, producers, cast) are all Canadian, yet we can't get a show of this caliber on Canadian TV without an act of Congress or something. Oh, I don't mean the same show (nobody'd believe Kiefer as RCMP/sissy, & nukes in Vancouver is about as likely as gunfights on main street in Moose Jaw in December), but an equal quality show. What do we get? "Intelligence" (which is on CBC, which should be a hint...) U.S. TV gets "NYPD Blue". We get a show that can't make up its mind if it wants to be "Streets of San Francisco" or "Lou Grant", so it decides to be both, with a tidy "the moral of this story was" in the epilogue, for the peopletoo stupid to have figured it out for themselves. The talent's here. Graham Yost wrote "Speed", & I can't think of a good reason it couldn't have been shot in Toronto. (The heat? ;D The producers & lawyers would certainly have been at home. =]) We've given tax breaks to have U.S. stars in Canadian-made productions before (Agency comes immediately to mind), so why not again? "X-Files" was shot in B.C.; why couldn't it have been entirely homegrown? We could export it to Oz, Britain, NZ, & places in Arkansas where they've got people who've actually been aboard UFOs. ;D (Dubbing into American is no problem, we've got to loop it in for Quebec & Newfoundland anyhow. ;) )
Have you noticed 'Heroes"? Give it a look when the new season finally debuts (which is looking like 2010, with the strike... ;D). It's a bit faux Xmen for me, but Jack Coleman (Noah Bennett, a.k.a. Well, I meant the entire thing. =D Not that the episodes didn't drag, because they did at times, but the series stalled after they got into Delta Quadrant...(how many alien species can you meet?) I started watching it before Jeri too, but I always liked her...and yes, the Borg were just plain freakin' cool (from a 17-year-old's standpoint--when they first appeared when I was small, I was scared.) =D
Exactly. I think that West Wing was and is so much better than those action-oriented shows...but we are apparently in the minority. -_-

I was a faithful fan of Blue from the pilot. Dennis was exceptional (tho my first reaction was, "Oh, Christ, not another Buntz."; viz "HSB"). I rapidly got over it (tho David leaving gave me a few bad days; I liked Kelly a lot.) Amy's butt didn't hurt, either. =] And Gail? OMG. If your heart doesn't speed up for her, see a doctor immediately. (Did you know she was the girl in the Michael J. Fox Pepsi ad? Do you even remember that? =]) The whole run of Blue was Andy being a better man today than he was yesterday. The ending was perfect. ("I'm not gonna want nuthin' else." Oh, yeah. He's got what he wants.) Another example of good writing & fine casting. I wish it wasn't so rare. Them going off was a sad day in this house.
"Maybe Canada just sucks" Yeah, I had come to that conclusion. I was hoping it was more complicated. ;D
