ITN

[edit]

Hi, thank you for helping out - I had to re-order your latest addition though. Wikipedia:In_the_news/Admin_instructions states: ITN items are in a bulleted list, ordered chronologically by date of occurrence not by date they were added, thus items may have to be posted in the middle of the template. Again, thanks! --BorgQueen (talk) 03:18, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Please disregard the comments, as I realize that I missed the time zone difference. :D Apologies. --BorgQueen (talk) 10:33, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
No worries, I meant to put the 29th but apparently had a typo. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 07:21, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand

[edit]

Hey there Ed. A month ago WS suggested that I ask you and Sturm about the possibility of it coming through a FAC. I asked Sturm first, since my experiences with im were less leniant than with you (no offense), and then I completly blanked out. So, I'm gonna ask you right now if she is ready. I've tried to elaborate on the seaplanes, but I couldn't find a lot of stuff. So, what do you say? Buggie111 (talk) 20:45, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

No offense taken. I'll take a look tomorrow; I'm off to bed. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 07:22, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
I've left comments on the talk page. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 21:21, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
I'll get around to fixing them. I hope to have it promoted on my wiki-birthday (November 30th), but I don't know how muc h of a chance there is for that. Buggie111 (talk) 22:59, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Careful

[edit]

When reverting edits, please be careful that you are not affecting multiple sections of a page. DS (talk) 01:18, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Also, in that hook re the Herman's Hermits movie, where is the 'real-world context'? DS (talk) 01:22, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
My apologies on reverting the copyediting as well; it was a mistake. The hook has no "real-world context", but consensus on the need for this appears to be against you. 05:24, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

I need an opinion. Someone removed a wikify tag that you placed October 2008 but I think it still needs lots of work and should remain on the wikify list. What do you think? Often I just would try to clean up the article myself but I wouldn't even know where to start with this one. Slightsmile (talk) 01:20, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

I suppose the article is technically wikified now, but it certainly needs a major cleanup and reorganization. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 18:29, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
I think reorganization means that the layout needs work. I'll give it a new wikify tag. I've seen people working on articles that I've tagged so I think that'll be the best thing. Slightsmile (talk) 20:07, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup ruling

[edit]

Ed, Need to know how my impending unified good topic of the British BCs should be scored. Should I get points for the individual Renown class and Courageous class GTCs that will be promoted shortly, plus points for assembling the 19-odd articles written this year into a unified Good Topic? Or does the unified Good Topic override everything and I only get points for GTs completed this round? Just to make things simpler the 4 Invincible class articles were written last year and not eligible for anything. The discussion is at Wikipedia:Featured topic candidates/Renown class battlecruisers/archive1.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 17:49, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

You can only receive points for GT/FT articles once, so if you've already claimed points for the Invincibles, Indefatigables, and Lions, you should only receive points for the Renowns, Courageous', Hood, Admiral class, and G3. It doesn't matter if they have been promoted this round or not, but if you've counted them once before, you can't do it again. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 18:26, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 22:44, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Blocking of Dogfish Jim

[edit]

Thanks for that... can his user page be deleted? Creepy behaviour or what? Catfish Jim and the soapdish (talk) 21:03, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

I've deleted it and replaced it with the {{indef}} template, as commonly done for indefinitely blocked users. Soap 21:09, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Good man! I'm going to have to get me some admin rights one of these days, so I can return the favour... Catfish Jim and the soapdish (talk) 21:14, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome! Thanks Soap for the clean up. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 23:33, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

USS Mississippi

[edit]

Hi Ed, Thanks for the help and pointers at the Mississippi article. Especially helping me to solve the issue of citations from the footnotes. So now another question, can you have mutliple links tot he same informational footnote, like we can for citation notes? Also, if I find a suitable picture in a book, and the picture is not copyright protected (e.g., too old or clearly work of a U.S. govt. employee), is it permissible to scan the image and use it in WP articles? Talk to you soon . Kevin --Kevin Murray (talk) 20:37, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome! Yes, all you need to do is: {{#tag:ref|blah blah blah|name="whatevs"|group=Note}}. Yes, you can, but remember that it either has to be published before 1923 or be a work of the federal government :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 02:32, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll work on these over the next couple of days. Have a great weekend. --Kevin Murray (talk) 18:02, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Japanese battlecruisers

[edit]

Hey, Ed, when you've got time, could you add stuff on Amagi and B-65 classes here? I've already got the lead and Kongo class bits done, and I'll tweak before joint ACR and eventual FLC noms. Cam (Chat)(Prof) 00:42, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

I've added a bit on the Amagi class, I'll try to get to the B-65's by this weekend. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 02:43, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
thanks man. Cam (Chat)(Prof) 03:59, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

thanks again! I've never done a multinom before so I was unsure of how to do it. I'm sure it'll be a hit-heavy given the way we've phrased it. Cam (Chat)(Prof) 19:53, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

November copy edit drive

[edit]
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars

A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

DYK nomination of List of battlecruisers of Japan

[edit]

Hello, your nomination of List of battlecruisers of Japan at DYK was reviewed and comments provided. --NortyNort (Holla) 10:52, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Same with ACR. I'm not sure how to do all the co-nom programming stuff, so feel free to add your name to the nominators in the ACR. Cam (Chat)(Prof) 17:21, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
I've added it. I think you can only add it manually for ACRs and FACs. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 18:02, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

The article Bearers of the Black Staff has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

non-notable per WP:BK

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 20:34, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Nomination of Bearers of the Black Staff for deletion

[edit]

A discussion has begun about whether the article Bearers of the Black Staff, which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bearers of the Black Staff until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.

You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 21:25, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

[edit]

Hi The ed17/Archives/33,

We're starting to get into the busy part of the semester for Online Ambassadors, and we want to check in and see how you're doing, what your opinions about where we are now, and any feedback you may have.

Please answer these questions either on my talk page or send them to me by email.

1. How many mentees are you currently working with?

2. Have you reached out to students who don't have mentors yet? If not, would you be willing to?

3. What do you think of the content of messages on the Google Group?

4. What do you think of the volume of messages on the Google Group?

5. Do you participate on the Google Group much? If not, what would make you participate more?

6. Are there any problems you've experienced so far?

7. Is there anything else Sage or the rest of the Public Policy Initiative team could do to make your experience as an Online Ambassador better?

8. Are you okay sharing your username with your answers to our Public Policy Initiative team, or would you prefer to remain anonymous?

Thanks for your feedback! --Ldavis (Public Policy) (talk) 19:26, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Kaigun

[edit]

It's basically allowed me to do a complete background section to the Fusō class on the entire genesis of the 8-8 fleet concept, the 70% capital ship ratio, and how developments by the RN and USN led to many of the aspects of the Fusō class. It's fantastic. I got it from Wilfred Laurier University, which was once reputed to have the best military history department in Canada. Cam (Chat)(Prof) 19:10, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

I agree, it's superb and essential to the background history and tactical thinking of the IJN.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:21, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
Wow, well now I'm really jealous...! I have an e-book on Fuso somewhere on my computer, btw. It'd be too big to send through email, but I can add citations to the article if you would like. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 19:30, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
I've ordered it from University of Toronto Library. Should arrive by Monday or Tuesday. Cam (Chat)(Prof) 21:28, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
