Move back to Texas

[edit]

Maximum temperatures in the summer months average from the 80s °F (26 °C) in the mountains of West Texas and on Galveston Island to around 100 °F (38 °C) in the Rio Grande Valley, but most areas of Texas see consistent summer high temperatures in the 90 °F (32 °C) range.[citation needed]

[edit]

The population of the new state initially consisted of English-speaking American settlers, who mainly inhabited the state's eastern/northeastern portions, and the Spanish-speaking former Mexicans (Tejanos), who consisted of the majority of the state's population in its southern and western portions. Statehood brought new settlers. Herds of Longhorn cattle roamed the state. Since the cattle could survive the environmental conditions of Texas and could be consumed, settlers used them for income, thus creating the cowboy culture of Texas.

Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks underlie most of the state, and are exposed in three places: the Llano uplift, Van Horn, and the Franklin Mountains near El Paso. Sedimentary rocks overlay most of these rocks. The oldest sediments were deposited on the flanks of a rifted continental margin (a passive margin that developed during the Cambrian period).
