In case you wondered, my username comes from the initials of my name, T.E.B. (If Wikipedia allowed all lower-case usernames, I would have chosen teb777.)
Being raised in the American Upper Midwest, I encountered almost no foreign languages when I was young. As a result I had little motivation to learn foreign languages. I regret that now. Beside English and German, I know a little Russian and Japanese but not so much that I could read it without looking up every other word.
What hooked me on Wikipedia was Proto-Indo-European and related articles.
