[edit]In April 2007, The Port of Portland presented Southwest Airlines with the Environmental Excellence Award in recognition of an exemplary effort in the category of Environmental Innovation.[1][1] The FAA has announced that it will seek a $10.2 million fine against Southwest for keeping unsafe 737s in the air in 2006 and 2007. As product safety concerns have been receiving more attention, from foods to toys, this has created a great deal of discussion within the spend management community about purchasing’s role in managing supply risk and product safety.Southwest Airlines has the reputation of being lean and mean, the mother of the point-to-point low cost business model that decimated legacy carriers . Their clairvoyance in hedging the price of jet fuel has helped keep costs low and fuel their growth across the country. While the impact of the fuel hedge might be diminishing, Southwests’ strategy in dealing with another cost problem finds them in hot waters. With growing demand, competition for raw materials and a generally rising cost on the environment, the pressure on cost is not going away. [2][2] The company pioneered the travel industry's first collaborative response to environmental issues as founder of the International Hotels and Environment Initiative (IHEI). The IHEI formed the foundations of the Tourism Partnership launched by the International Business Leaders Forum in 2004, of which IHG is still a member today. The environment and local communities remain at the heart of IHG's global corporate responsibility focus. [3] [3]

[edit]BMW is no stranger to environmental initiatives. The company is a charter member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's(EPA) National Environmental Achievement Track, which recognizes companies for their environmental stewardship and performance. It is also a member of the South Carolina Environmental Excellence Program and is on the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index, which rates environmentally friendly companies.[4] BMW has taken measures to reduce the impact the company has on the environment. It is trying to design less-polluting cars by making existing models more efficient, as well as developing environmentally friendly fuels for future vehicles. Possibilities include: electric power, hybrid power (combustion, engines and electric motors)hydrogen engines. [5] In 1994 when the company set itself the goal of implementing environmental guidelines, it laid the groundwork for the environmental management system of the BMW Group. Thanks to our systematic creation of manuals and internal standards, all plants worldwide now operate according to uniform rules. Thus, customers can assume that the same high environmental standards will be met in production of BMW cars, no matter where they are manufactured. [6]

[edit]Time Warner is committed to conducting businesses in an environmentally responsible and proactive manner. Their aim is to conserve natural resources and minimize waste through source reduction and recycling; handle and dispose of wastes through safe, environmentally responsible methods; encourage energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources; and encourage our business partners and suppliers to strive for the same high levels of environmental performance. [1] Time Warner Cable will shoot to meet environmental standards with its new regional headquarters in Morrisville's Perimeter Park. The developer, Duke Realty Corp., said Tuesday that the 160,000-square-foot, Class A office building will be built to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Duke and Time Warner will shoot for "silver" certification under the LEED program, the second highest of the system's four levels. Architecture firm Giffels designed the building. Construction is expected to start in April and end by April 2009. Time Warner Cable announced in December 2007 that it would be building a new regional headquarters in Perimeter Park, directly across from the headquarters of computer maker Lenovo. [2] November 2001, Time Warner began the cleanup and restoration of the former train station building that had turn into a Brownfield site. An historic limestone structure dating to 1937 still stands on the property, which Time Warner Cable owns. Brownfields are abandoned or underused properties where real or perceived environmental contamination hinders the potential for redevelopment. A groundwater monitoring program included installation of six new groundwater wells. The total cost to Time Warner was more than $1 million.[3]

[edit]PETCO was recognized with an Environmental accolade for extended producer responsibility for the PET industry and awarded a Trophy for environmental responsibility / sustainability. The award declared PETCO to be an excellent example of a voluntary industry-driven initiative to help solve waste stream problems, fully meeting the requirements for a trophy to reward environmental responsibility and sustainability. The judges applauded PETCO for taking on extended producer responsibility and imposing accountability over the entire life cycle of PET packaging.[1] PETCO natural and organic pet foods, and a wide assortment of environment-friendly pet care products, including pet toys, accessories, cat litter and cleaning supplies.[2] In 2005, a settlement recovering costs of more than $2 million for the clean up of 1992 Michigan oil and gas wells once owned by ExxonMobil and Petco. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) sought recovery of the costs incurred to restore the sites after the wells were abandoned in 1997. [3] [4] [5]
