Jayson Zion Dennison (April 21, 2070 – February 20, 2190) was an American astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, inventor and science communicator. known most for his part in the redirection of the NASA space program and the incendiary of First Contact. He is also known for his work on black holes, warp drive, and EAC (Early Alien Communication). He has won many notable awards, including The Nobel Peace Prize for his discovery of warp drive speeds, and Presidential Award of Freedom for first contact with the Lagos race.
Early life and education
[edit]Dennison was born in Harlem, New York. His biological father was fatally shot in during altercation in a Manhattan bank a few months before he was born and his mother died in a fatal car crash, hours before his birth. Dennison was adopted by Dr. James Dennison Jr. and wife Alisha Caroline Dennison. He grew up in Manhattan, attending public school from kindergarten through high school. Dennison obsessively studied astronomy in his teens. One of Dennison's early influences was astronomer Dr.Neil deGrasse Tyson. Tyson was nearly 111 years of age at the time of Dennsion's birth and died shortly after, but Dennison studied his research almost religiously, according to his mother. "He was always watching Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey," his mother said in an interview. "He would spend hours in front of the computer screen, listening to old podcasts and watching old shows. It came to a point where we'd have to tear him away from the computer screen." Dennison was able to grasp concepts such as the spacetime continuum and mathematical models at a young age. He even gained some fame in the astronomy community by giving lectures on the subject at fifteen.
Dennison dreamed of human space travel and contact with alien races at a very young age, which was why identified with Tyson so much. "I always said the first thing I would do when I became a scientist was figure out if there was life on Europa," Dennison said. During his podcast Star Talk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson surmised that although Jupiter's moon Europa is far out of the reach of the habitable zone, there may be life lurking underneath the surface. The stress of Jupiter's gravity pumps into Europa, melting the ice. It has been theorized that underneath the ice is a liquid ocean that has been there for billions of years. Tyson, and others, have pondered the possibility of life existing within the confines of the ice.
Dennison played basketball in middle school, but quit to focus more on schooling. At the age of twelve, Dennison was moved up to high school and took classes at local universities. He was admitted into Harvard University in April of his senior year in high school. He graduated from Harvard Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and astronomy. Dennison then attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his masters and his Ph.D. in astronomy and chemistry. Dennison wanted to be "a prime participant on the frontier of cosmic discovery."
First Contact
[edit]Shortly after receiving his Ph.D., Dennison was employed at NASA as an aerospace engineer. Around the time of his employment at NASA, Dennison began noticing the radio waves his alarm clock picked up in the middle of the night. Co-workers complained about his incessant talking and obsessing; some feared he was mentally incapable of doing his job. "Sometimes it was all he talked about," a former coworker said in an interview. In 2097, NASA fired Dennison as the complaints rose.
Dennison could not find work in his area of expertise, due to his damaged history with NASA. He found a job weighing tables in a restaurant in downtown Harlem. He had moved in with a friend and had to scrape by on what he made in tips from the restaurant. Dennison still, however, paid attention to the radio waves whenever he could. "I just felt like someone was trying to communicate with me," Dennison said in a later interview. "Something was just weird. They weren't coming in normal frequencies. It was almost like something was blocking them." Dennison, on the roof of his friend's apartment, thought he heard a clear spoken language in the static. Dennison did not understand the language, nor did he recognize it as any earthly language. He was sure there was some otherworldly being sending out the signals. Dennison immediately went to work. He understood that CETI had been trying to pick through the radio waves for alien contact for years, but he understood that they didn't know exactly what to look for. Because Dennison didn't have NASA to back him, he created what he could out of what he had. Using that old clock radio and a few satellites he hooked up an old laptop to record the frequencies.
After 48 hours of sitting in front of the laptop on the roof of his friends Harlem apartment, Dennison finally picked up another signal. Though still faint, Dennison was sure he had recorded another being's message. Dennison brought his findings to NASA. Disbelieving of his findings, NASA took over the information and tried their hand at contacting the foreign being. With more advanced technology than Dennison's clock radio, NASA sent out their own signal. Within a week, another signal came back, and though neither could understand the language of the other, they were sure that they had made first contact with an alien race.
After First Contact
[edit]Universal Translator
[edit]After First Contact, Dennison went to work again with NASA to develop a means of understanding the alien beings. Within the month of beginning his work, Dennison created what he called the Universal Translator. This was a highly experimental device, but it was well-suited for its basic purposes. The device would translate alien languages into a given human language in short order, though the use of a skilled translator was mandatory to understand any written language. Dennison and NASA learned that the message was a plea for help by a race called Lagos on the planet Lagovia (a planet humans had been calling Alpha Centauri Bb), in the Centaurus constellation. The planet had been in a war with the Kigomians of the planet Kigomia (from the Andromeda Galaxy, NASA later discovered) and had been seeking help from neighboring solar systems. The Centaurus constellation is an estimated 4.37 light years away from the Solar System, so it was understood that the messages that Dennison received were about as old. NASA, however, was concerned about the second message, a different language that was anything but friendly.
Kigomians
[edit]It was Dennison who designed the plan for and oversaw the building of war ships with warp speed capabilities. Greatly overlooking the feat of creating a ship with the ability to operate at 99.9% the speed of light, Dennison's concern was that since Lagovia was our closest neighboring exoplanet, earth may have been in grave danger. Dennison is remembered for his painstaking effort and unwavering commitment to the project. Finally, in summer of 2122, Dennison had completed his first prototype of a warp drive ship. But before anyone could test the ship, Earth was in for a great surprise. A fleet of ships carrying, thousands of "hominoid beings with deep blue skin and pitch-black, beadlike eyes," launched an attack on Earth. The ships were described as "spherical and far-advanced from human technology." NASA discovered shortly that these were the Kigomians. They had been on track to arrive at Earth, being just 4.37 light years away from the recently destroyed Lagos planet. Those who heeded NASA's advice to take cover below ground survived. But an estimated 3 billion people died and all of Earth's human infrastructures were destroyed. Dennison and many of the NASA scientists survived the blast by taking cover far beneath the surface of the Earth to shield themselves from the ultraviolet rays and the nuclear blasts. June 28th was a day that has ever since lived in infamy.
The Malindi
[edit]After a week, the Kigomians ceased their attack. Though many satellites were destroyed, Dennison and NASA caught another signal on their improved scanner, this time from a race who called themselves the Malindi. Having just suffered an attack from an alien race, NASA did not trust the Malindi. But since they were incapable of fighting back because of a depletion of military resources, they had no choice but to allow the Malindi onto Earth. The Maldini were a race of "hominoids that resembled cats." In a sense that they had sharp canines, large, yellow, unmoving eyes that closed similarly to the way a cats does (due to three eyelids and a nictitating membrane); they even had catlike movements.
The Malindi were familiar with the Kigomians having recently suffered an attack to their home planet. The Malindi had the means for fighting back, however, and remained relatively stable. The Malindi found out that the Kigomians were a nomadic race that survived by stripping foreign planets of resources for the betterment of their own ships, sometimes colonizing the planets and staying for decades. The surviving beings on the planets were put to work on Kigomian ships where they stayed until the ends of their lives. It was surmised that the Kigomians had figured out a way to warp space and create wormholes that transported them into random parts of the galaxy at a random time.
The Malindi assisted Earth in rebuilding and helped abate further attacks. Dennison, helped by the Malindi, created the technology to rebuild the human world. Since there were barely enough people to reform different countries, the people of the world untied to form one country. The concept of currency no longer existed, nor did many of the governmental and life practices of pre-Kigomian attack. "It was the most peaceful I'd ever seen earth," newly appointed World Leader Celina Jones said. "I think people were just concerned with rebuilding, just accepting our humanness." Jones later surmised that the understanding of the fact that we as humans weren't alone in our very own galaxy was what made human beings appreciate each other more.
Post-Apocalypse
[edit]The planet continued with its advancement with science and medicine, launching the first humans into the farther solar systems in the galaxy. Unfortunately, Dennsion did not live long enough to see this happen, though his daughter Angeline Dennsion promised to be the first one out. She became Commander of the first Earth ship sent out to the planet of Malindi in the year 2133, the E.S.S. Zion 13. NASA has made plans to start its first human colony on the moon and has begun working on the first ship capable of travelling to other galaxies. There has been extensive research with neighboring races, including Malindi, on the workings of black holes and time travel.
Jayson Dennsion's birth date has become a national holiday on Earth and is celebrated by most, if not all. He is looked at as a world hero and model for Earth citizenship.
