In 1981, Binnig and Rohrer conducted the first successful tunneling experiment. A feedback loop that controlled the gap between the surfaces of the probe and the sample was pivotal to the success of their experiment. Binnig and Rohrer also realized that their setup could be used to image the topography of material at the atomic scale, and their team subsequently used the STM to resolve the structure of silicon at the atomic scale. Earlier work on imaging with atomic-scale resolution was achieved with either field-ion microscopy or electron microscopy.[1]
The SPM image is a convolution of tip shape and sample topography.[2]

The Datsun brand automobile is owned and produced by Nissan. The name originated in 1931 when Dat Motorcar Company came out with a new smaller version of their original car. The company named this car "Datson", but when Nissan bought out the company they changed the name to "Datsun". Many types of this car were produced including the Fairlady, 240Z, and the 140Z.[3]
