The FIFA World Tournament (formerly FIFA 06 World Tournament) is a soccer tournament I run in my spare time using the video game FIFA 17 (FIFA 06 for the Nintendo GameCube, and FIFA 13 for the Xbox 360 in the past), using the international teams the game offers. I always select the United States of course.

FIFA 06
[edit]The first tournament I ever completed was the night of July 4, 2010. Over the course of a year I had completed eight tournaments, using the 39 international teams the game offers. To view the most recent tournament, see User:Tampabay721/FIFA 06 Results. To view past results, see the #Results section below and click on the corresponding link in the "number" column. Upon clicking, you will go to a past revision of the results page.
Format
[edit]All 39 teams were given a rating from as low as 2½ stars to 5 stars by the game makers. I have placed each team into one of three "levels" based on their ranking.
Qualifying Stage
[edit]- First Level - Eight teams ranked with 4½ stars or higher compete in a league-style tournament. Each team plays two games against the other teams in the level (one home and one away, though I don't think it really makes a difference in the game) for a total of 14 games. After all games have been played, the four teams with the highest point total advance to the Final Stage.
- Second Level - 16 "middle-of-the-pack" teams compete in a group-style tournament, with four groups. The groups are selected randomly, though I make sure the USA is placed in the last group in order to make it easier on me to record the results. Each team plays two games against the other members of their group, one home and one away for a total of six games. The winners of the four groups advance to the Final Stage. The top two second place teams also advance. The second place team with the third-best point total is relegated to the Third Level for that particular tournament. This allows for the Third Level to have an even 16 teams.
- Third Level - The worst 15 teams, plus the one team still eligible from the Second Level. The Third Level also competes in a group-style tournament with four groups that are randomly selected. The group winners and the two best second place teams also advance.
Final Stage
[edit]- Group Round - The teams that are still alive compete in a group-style tournament with four groups that are randomly selected (as mentioned before, I make sure the USA is in the last group to make it easier on me to record the results). Each team plays one game against the other members of their group for a total of three games. The top two teams in each group advance to the next round.
- Knockout Round - The remaining teams square off in a single elimination tournament. The group winners play the group runners-up in the first games (For example, Group A winner plays Group B runner-up). The last team left is the champion. A third-place game is played between the two semifinal losers.
FIFA 13
[edit]In 2013 I bought a used Xbox 360. I got FIFA 13 from a friend who had just bought FIFA 14 for the PS4, so he didn't need the old version anymore. After more than two years since playing out a tournament, I thought of a new way to run a tournament under a new format that would included every team and still be able to stick with the three-tier model I had come up with originally.
Format
[edit]Qualifying Stage
[edit]- First Tier - 15 teams ranked 4½ stars or higher compete in a league-style tournament. Each team plays two games against the other teams in the level for a total of 28 games. After all games have been played, the four teams with the highest point total advance to the Final Stage. The next four teams play in the Relegation Round. In the Relegation Round, each team plays two games against the other teams for a total of six games. The top team at the end of this round remains alive in the tournament and has to qualify for the Final Stage through the Second Tier.
- Second Tier - 15 "middle-of-the-pack" teams plus the relegated team still alive from the first tier compete in a 16-team group style format. Each team plays two games against the other teams for a total of six games. The four group winners, plus the two best second place finishers out of the four groups advance to the final stage.
- Third Tier - The worst 16 teams compete in a 16-team group style format. Each team plays two games against the other teams for a total of six games. The four group winners, plus the two best second place finishers out of the four groups advance to the Final Stage.
Final Stage
[edit]The Final Stage is unchanged from its predecessor.
- Group Round - The teams that are still alive compete in a group-style tournament with four groups that are randomly selected.
