Company History
[edit]Workhorse Custom Chassis LLC was incorporated in 1998 under the leadership of Andrew Taitz, who owned Union City Body Company, a manufacturer of walk-in truck (or step-van) bodies.[2] Workhorse began manufacturing chassis in 1999 after acquiring the assets of GM's motor home and walk-in truck P-Chassis businesses.[3][4] Workhorse built a 209,000 square-foot manufacturing plant in Union City over the winter of 1998-99 and moved GM's P-Chassis assembly line from Detroit, Mi.[5]
Workhorse's main competitors are Ford and Freightliner Trucks for diesel- and gas-powered motor home and walk-in truck chassis.[6][7]
In 2004, Workhorse formed a joint venture with General Motors to create a GMT 610 G-series Chevrolet Express cutaway.[8]
In 2005, Workhorse was purchased by Navistar International Corporation.[9][10]
And in 2008, Workhorse entered into a joint venture with Monaco Coach Corporation for Custom Chassis Products, located in Elkhart, Ind.[11] CCP manufactures rear diesel pusher strip chassis for the RV/motor home industry.
