The Palm Treo 800w

[edit]

Introduction:

The Treo 800w is one of Palms newest offerings to the smart phone market. It is the third windows mobile Palm device offered by Sprint. The 700w and 700wx being the first two Palm devices to run windows mobile. The 800w is pretty much a complete redesign of the Treo forum factor since the Treo 600. It runs on the updated Windows Mobile 6.1 OS. It is (A2DP) Bluetooth, GPS and Wifi enabled. Being a Windows Mobile OS phone there are thousands of freeware, shareware and commercial applications out there to pretty much make the 800w do just what you need it to do.

A Registry Edit And How To Guide

[edit]

Windows Registry Hacks (These registry edits work fine on the 800w & will probably work for the Treo Pro)

When I switched over from my 700p to my 800w I got to making it me. I started downloading and installing apps, ringtones, pictures and updates. After a little while it just wasn't enough. I had read about registry hacks and some of the things they did. After about a month of jumping from forum to forum I found the info and hacks that I was looking for. I started a thread (here) on the MTDN Forums. But you know how links after a little while start to get buried in the forums and become hard to find. So I decided to write up this little how do guide and hack list up. Then had it posted on our home page here at MTDN and Wikipedia. The following registry hacks work on the Treo800w. I have tested and used these hacks for some time. They all work well with each other. I haven't had any problems using any of these hacks with any other app I have installed on my 800w. I take no credit for coming up with these myself. A lot of these hacks have been around for along time. Most of these should work on the Treo Pro as well.

To do registry hacks there are 3 things you need first. 1. A good backup app. I use the Sprite backup for all of my system things. I also use Daswire for all of my contacts, SMS, and ringtones just incase the Sprite backup file gets corrupted. It happens and it's always good to backup your backup’s right. Use any backup app you like. Just remember to backup! 2. A good registry editing app. There are a lot of good ones out there. I use PHM RegEdit, it's free and dose everything you need. Again just use what ever app you’re comfortably with. 3. A pad of paper and a pen. As your doing edits write down what you change. That way if you change something and it doesn't work you know what you changed and can change it back with out having to do a hard rest.

Not that daunting of a list right. Now to do registry edits all you do is open your edit app, follow the registry tree to the values you want to change. Make your changes and do a soft reset to set your changes and enjoy. I know what your saying registry tree?, values? What are those? I'm not going to say I know exactly what they are either, or what they do or why they do what they do. But I can tell you where to look and what changes to make to make your 800w a little more user friendly.

Note: I'm using PHM RegEdit to do these edits so some of the short cuts I use might be a little different if you’re using another editing app.

One more thing. You’re going to need to know a couple of abbreviations. Your registry is broken down into 4 different folder that hold a lot of other folders. Each of the 4 folder are named HotKey_??????_????. Here are the folder names as they appear using PHM RegEdit and there abbreviations I'll be using.

• HK_CLASSES_ROOT = HKCR(Don't use this one much) • HK_CURRENT_USER = HKCU(We'll be using this one allot) • HK_LOACL_MACHINE = HKLM(We'll be using this one allot) • HK_ USERS(Don't use this one at all)

Now each one of these folders open to show more folders setup in a expendably tree. Kind of like opening a Zipped file on your 800w. Each one of these folders are named. In the hacks below when you see ex. HKCU/???/???/??? Each name is a folder. Just follow the list.

I'll go through the first hack step by step for you. This hack stops your phone from beeping when you plug-in or unplug your 800w from either the AC cable, USB cable or a phone dock.

Disable Charger Connect/Disconnect Sound HKCU/ControlPanel/Volume/

Find the folder named ChargerConnectSound, put quotes around the file ChargerConnect.wav. Do the same for the ChargerDiconnectSound folder.

So here's how it should unfold. 1. Open PHM RegEdit 2. Second folder down is HKEY_CURRENT_USER, open it. (With PHM RegEdit push the 5way button to the right) That opens it up to another set of folders. 3. Find the folder call "Volume"; it's the 16th one down. (With PHM you can hit the first letter of the name of the folder you’re looking for to make it a little easier.) 4. Now open the "Volume" folder. In that folder you'll see the folders we are looking for. 5. Highlight the folder named "ChargerConnectSound" 6. In the window below the folder window there is one file named "ChargerConnect.wav"(no quotes), highlight it. A new window pops up. Under "Value Data" you see the ChargerConnect.wav. You can delete this or just put quotes ("-") around it. Click the ok button and save. 7. Now do the same routine for the ChargeDisconnect folder. 8. You have to give the os a little bit of time (a minute or 2) to rewrite the registry. Then do a soft reset. 9. Done!!!! Your edit is now set.

Note: Some registry edits take with out resetting and some will only start working after you do the rest. Also you can do all of these edits at one time then reset or you can reset after every one.

So that's it. Not real hard right? Hope this will help a few of you. Have fun and remember, Back Up is your friend.

Registry Hacks That Work O Treo 800w:

This one disables that beep, the loud one when you plug-in or unplug your charger or sync cable.

1. Disable the beep when you plug and unplug the charger or sync cable:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Volume

Under charger connect sound, find chargerconnect.wav and either delete it or put quote marks around it and window won't recognize it. Do the same thing for charger disconnect.

You know when you go to make a call, find that number you need and press the send button. You get the phone up to your ear just in time for that really loud beep. Love that one!!!! LOL

2. Disable the beep when initiating a call:

HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\Dialing

Find Script and delete the "P".

This one is really good. It seems to help the Treo a lot! You know how when you’re on a call and you increase or decrease the volume you get that loud beep and a little bit of lag in your call. This will get rid of both.

3. Disable the beeps on volume increase and decrease:

a. HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\LoudestInCallVolume Change the 'Script' value to blank (erase the 'p')
b. HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\QuietestInCallVolume Change the 'Script' value to blank (erase the 'p')
c. HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\StandardInCallVolume Change the 'Script' value to blank (erase the 'p')

Here's one I missed from my 650 & 700p.

4. To change the red phone key back to the same functionality as the 650,700p & 700WX (i.e. pressing red phone turns screen off instead of going to home) Change the following Key

  HKLM\Software\Palm\Keyboard\
Change EndKeyAsHomeKey from 1 to 0

To create these you need to navigate to HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/. When I did this and looked for MaxRequestThread & MaxConnectionsPerServe they weren't there. So you have to add them your self. I'm using PHM Registry(it's free & just as good as Resco) so My method maybe just a little different that what you would have to do. Nav over to IE/Main/ folder, choose from your menu "edit"-> "add new Dword Value. Add the line "MaxRequestThreads" (no quotes). Then you have to add the value number. I've set mine to 10. Save it. Then do the same over for the "MaxConnectionsPerServer"

5. Speed Up Internet Explorer

HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/MaxRequestThreads = 5

HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/MaxConnectionsPerServer = 5

On my other Palm devices you could turn off the shutter sound when in the camera app. Here's how you can do it on the 800.

6. Disabling shutter wav.

HKLM/System/Pictures/Camera/OEM/SoundFile

Find the wav. file named ShutterSound312.wav and put quotes around it. Save it.

This one is good. You know when you’re reading a web page or document and not doing anything else, your screen well dim. Here's the fix!

7. Stop backlight dimming on inactivity.

HKCU/ControlPanel/Backlight

Edit "BatteryTimeOut2" (Default is 30 = 1min) I changed mine to 60, now dimming, backlight and screen all shut off after 2 mins of inactivity.

8. Disable Security Warning When Installing Apps

HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies

Look for the DWORD "0000101a". Change its value from 0 to 1

You can change how thin or thick the horizontal and vertical scroll bars are. This works for all apps and any internet browsers.

9. Change Scroll Bar Thickness

HKLM\System\GWE

For horizontal scroll bar look for the DWORD's: cxHScr & cyHScr.

For vertical scroll bars look for the DWORD's : cxVScr & cyVScr.

The default value is 13. Change it to what ever you want. Higher numbers make it thicker, lower numbers make it thinner.

10. Increase Ringer Volume

HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring

Find the "AttenuationCategory" Default is 2, Max is 5.

Note: When I turned mine up to 5 it was way to loud, lots of distortion. Set it to 4 and with the ring volume set to max makes it nice and low with no distortion.

You can disable the Radio on and Radio off sound with this one.

11. Disable Radio On\Off sound

HKLM\Palm\Carrier\DiallookupPlugin\PhoneStatus

Look for the strings "GoodbyeSound" put quotes around or delete RadioOff.wav "WelcomeSound" put quotes around or delete RadioOn.wav

This one is a work around for the block Sprint has on the internet sharing block they put on the 800w. No shutting down your internet connection, plugging in your 800w, then reestablishing your connection. I've only used this one two or three times, it worked every time. Just be careful! not sure how Sprint fells about this one.

12. Disable Block On ICS

HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing

Value Name : Extension Value : IcsHelper.dll <- either delete it or put quotes ("-") around it.

The next two are for the SMS app. The first one changes the character limit from 160 character to 1600 characters per message. It still send your message out in 160 character size messages. So if you type out a message that's 320 character, it will still be sent as two separate messages. But it dose it on it"s own. The second one changes the limit of the amount of maximum recipients you can send the same message to at the same time.

13. Increase Max Characters Per Message

HKLM\Software\Palm\Varnish\Messaging\SMS

Find MaxPartsPerMsg change the value from 1 to 10

14. Increase The Number of SMS Recipients

HKLM\Software\Palm\Varnish\Messaging\SMS

Find MaxRecipients change the value(default is 10) to what ever you want.
