Stain Commission is the joint commission of institutes of Legal Medicine and Forensic Science in Germany. Originally, it was set up by the German Society for Legal Medicine (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Rechtsmedizin) in the early 1980s. Now it consists of 4 delegates of the German Society for Legal Medicine, 4 delegates of the local State laboratories (Landeskriminalamt LKA) and the Federal laboratory (Bundeskriminalamt BKA) and a neutral Chairman, Prof. Peter M. Schneider (Institute of Legal Medicine, Cologne). The Stain Commission is organizing the GEDNAP Proficiency Tests, that is carried out by Prof. Bernd Brinkmann's Institute of Forensic Genetics, involved in organizing the annual Stain Workshop (Spurenworkshop) and elaborates guidelines for forensic genetics (i.e., for the interpretation of mixed stains (Int J Legal Med (2009) 132: 1-5) [1] and for the statistical treatment of DNA database hits[2].
