Susan Matthis Johnson Susan Matthis Johnson is a journalist, columnist and writer from Richwood, West Virginia. Her columns on cultural and political issues are published periodically in the Charleston Gazette-Mail in Charleston, West Virginia. Since 2015 she has written a weekly column, My Side of the Mountain, in the Nicholas Chronicle published in Summersville, West Virginia.

Susan Matthis Johnson was also the only PBS News Hour Student Reporting Lab mentor in West Virginia between 2010 and 2016. Her students at Richwood High School produced news segments about West Virginia issues from a teen perspective, including a segment on opioid abuse which aired during the visit of President Barack Obama to West Virginia in October of 2015.

As journalism teacher and sponsor of the Richwood High School Lumberjack News and Woodchopper student newspaper, Susan Matthis Johnson's students won numerous awards at the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University. She was named Nicholas County Teacher of the Year in 2011. In 2016 she retired from teaching. ...
