DSEC specializes in providing a comprehensive range of engineering and procurement services within the shipbuilding and marine industries.

History

[edit]

DSEC was established in 1993 as a subsidiary of DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine Engineering, now known as Hanwha Ocean).

DSEC is well known by developments and collaborations with shipyards and shipowners that are contributing to the advancement of the maritime industry. From its establishment as a subsidiary of DSME, which went through DSME's highest renaissance(08’~15’) together; to its subsequent independence(16’) till today, DSEC has been playing a pivotal role in various high-profile projects.[1]

One of the notable collaborations was with General Dynamics (GD) NASSCO to construct ships for the U.S. market under the Jones Act.[2] This partnership led to the successful construction of PC-1 class product tankers, including the lead ship, Golden State, which was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, setting a high standard for the Product Carrier program at NASSCO.[3][4][5][6]

Furthermore, DSEC's partnership with GD NASSCO also resulted in the construction of the world's first LNG-powered containerships for TOTE, Inc. These LNG-powered containerships received prestigious awards and recognition for their innovative design and environmental impact.[7]

DSEC's commitment to innovation is evident in its development of the "ECO" class LNG conversion-ready product tankers, which incorporated improved fuel efficiency and environmental protection features.[8][9] Additionally, the collaboration with NAVANTIA for the building of the Suezmax tanker and the development of the new Con-Ro design with state-of-the-art green technology features showcased DSEC's dedication to sustainable maritime solutions.[10][11][12]

DSEC has an extensive track record of providing over 100 EPC solutions, including FEED engineering, not only for new shipbuilding but also in the field of retrofitting. DSEC has collaborated with leading global shipping companies across various vessel types, such as containerships, tankers, bulk carriers, LNG carriers, and PCTC. These projects include bulbous bow retrofits, BWMS retrofits, SOx scrubber installations, cargo containment system (CCS) installations, and other retrofits.[13][14][15][16]

The technical assistance and license agreement signed with GTT for the construction of membrane containment systems,[17][18][19]as well as the collaboration with HMM's win-win fund for scrubber installation, demonstrate DSEC's continuous efforts to stay at the forefront of industry standards and regulations.[20]

Moreover, DSEC's involvement in projects such as the LNG tank construction for a polar exploration vessel and the design[21] and material supply for the U.S. MARAD’s National Security Multi-Mission Vessel project further solidify its position as a key contributor to maritime industry's public prosperity as well.[22][23]

DSEC has also been engaged in EP business in the naval ship sector, collaborating with shipyards in the United States and Canada.[24] Through these partnerships, DSEC has provided design packages, equipment supply, and productivity enhancement consulting services to shipyards.

In the field of eco-friendly solutions, DSEC is focusing its efforts on the research and development of eco-friendly ships powered by methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen. DSEC is conducting studies to apply these technologies gradually, starting with smaller vessels.[25]
