The Summer Wind is a 48' steel schooner based in Philadelphia, PA. She was built in Deltaville, VA in 1979. She is the only Chinese Junk-rigged schooner available for public sail in North America. The Summer Wind does 90-minute tours up to six times each day along the Delaware River in Philadelphia, as well as private charters to the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware Bay. She is owned and operated by American Sailing Tours, Inc.
Description
[edit]The Summer Wind is 48' long overall with an 11' beam and 385 sq ft of sail area. She carries a Chinese Junk or lug rig and is based on the original Gazelle design of naval architect Thomas E. Colvin.
The Summer Wind is a member of the American Schooner Association and Tall Ships America. She provides a sailing intern program for live-aboard crew during the sailing season for crew training for their merchant mariner credentials. The sailing season runs from April through October.
