Welcome to the CCCCCCCCC Project!

[edit]

When I was a young and naïve plant collector, I posted a question online asking for a list of every species of succulent so that I could buy them all. People pointed me to multiple different websites and organizations. Unfortunately, every list was unsatisfying, and I've been mad about it ever since. So, I'm making the CCCCCCCCC Project (9C Project) as an outlet for my anger. CCCCCCCCC stands for Collecting, Collating, and Comprehensively Compiling Cactaceae and Crassulaceae for Collectors, Conservators, and Civilians.

My goal with the 9C Project is to make high quality, in-depth, up-to-date, and properly cited Wikipedia articles for some of my favorite plants: succulents. These articles should be accessible to beginners, but link directly to materials that those who want to know more will find useful. In practice, this means including a map of the plant’s natural range, but not listing every individual sighting. My target audience is my younger self: someone who has a few plants and wants to identify and care for them. If you have any suggestions for resources or different ways to do things, please let me know on my talk page!

The 9C Project will focus on plants that have been formally described / have gained botanical authority. Anyone can create a hybrid succulent, give it a catchy name, and sell it on Etsy, and I don't know if it's humanly possible to document them all.

Phase 1 - An article on a single Echeveria Species

Phase 2 - An article for every species in the genus Echeveria

Phase 3 - Every species and genus in the family Crassulaceae

Phase 4 - Every species and genus in the family Cactaceae

Phase 5 - World Domination

To-Do List:

  • Make a home page for the 9C Project
  • Read through Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Resources and a handful of other articles to get an idea of what a good plant article looks like
  • Make a template for what a high quality article should look like/include
  • Do the article for Echeveria Shaviana
  • Make a kanban board for articles I want to create
  • Write an article for the Cactus and Succulent Journal about the importance of science communication and Wikipedia

Currently working on: nothing! life is too busy :)

Estimated completion date: some time after I finish college, get a job, start a family, become an empty nester, and retire
