SS Cape Fear (T-AK-5061) was laid down on April 29, 1971 as SS LASH España for Prudential-Grace Lines and operated as Austral Lightning by Farrell Lines from July 1, 1976 to April 1, 1985. The Maritime Administration purchased Austral Lightning in 1985 and renamed it Cape Fear in February 1993.
