Mary Rutan Health (MRH) is a not-for-profit healthcare organization with a comprehensive and integrated system of inpatient, outpatient, and community services connected to meet community members' health and wellness needs. Multiple facilities blanket a five-county region that includes Logan, Champaign, Hardin, Shelby, and Auglaize counties in central Ohio. Medical specialties include cardiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and orthopedics.
MRH received a five-star rating for three consecutive years from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.[1]In 2013, MRHreceived the Logan County Chamber of Commerce Integrity in Business Award.[2]
Mary Rutan Hospital, located in Bellefontaine, Ohio, opened in 1919 to provide quality healthcare to the residents of Logan County. Since beginning as a 25-bed, two-floor hospital, the not-for-profit healthcare organization has grown and expanded its footprint.
The Mary Rutan Health Center opened in 2018 in Bellefontaine, Ohio. The 74,200-square-foot facility houses an urgent care facility, expanded physical rehabilitation services, and sports medicine, pain management, and occupational medicine services.[3]
The Mary Rutan Health Center was enlarged in 2023. The three-floor facility was expanded to accommodate growing service lines, including orthopedics and sports medicine, ENT, neurology, audiology, and podiatry. The additional third floor houses an 18,000-square-foot space with 21 private exam rooms, onsite imaging, and a waiting room.[4]
The Mary Rutan Foundation (the Foundation) works to create philanthropic relationships to support patient care services, medical scholarships, medical equipment, and capital development while promoting health and wellness through educational programs and services to the community.[5]
With the support of Mary Rutan Foundation funding, emergency preparedness was enhanced when several AEDs were purchased to use at local schools.[6]
The Foundation offers a Scholarship & Loan program annually to local students to assist with medical career education expenses. Since 1992, over $2.35 million has been awarded to Logan County residents pursuing a degree in a medical field.[7]
The Foundation also offers Community Wellness Grants to address high-priority health risks and needs for Logan County. In 2023-2024, mental health was chosen as the county's most pressing health concern for youth and adults. The Wellness Grants were given to chosen programs focusing on mental health initiatives targeting youth. Programs were required to be Logan County schools, and grant requests were from $500 to $5,000.[8] A total of nearly $450,000 has been awarded since the inception of the grant program.[9]
Mary Rutan Health originated with a gift from Rebecca R. Williams in 1916. Mrs. Williams specified that the property, deeded to the city of Bellefontaine, Ohio, was to be used for a hospital and to be named in memory of her mother, Mary Rutan. Construction began, and in 1919, the doors opened to a 25-bed, two-floor hospital. Multiple expansions have occurred during the organization's 100-plus-year history, each time increasing services offered to the community.[10]
