Appearance
Metal Gear Solid 3
[edit]- Like the previous two games, MGS3 breaks the fourth wall at times.
- Naked Snake uses the famous box disguise at one point, as has his counterpart Solid Snake. If the player calls Sigint while hiding in the box, a rather humorous conversation takes place, with Snake commenting on how it's "his destiny" to be the "Man in the Box".
- If Naked Snake dies during the game, the game over screen displays the words "SNAKE IS DEAD", which slowly morph into the words "TIME PARADOX": now that Snake is dead, the events of the Metal Gear series cannot happen.
- During gameplay Naked Snake fights Ocelot several times, but never kills him; thus Ocelot remains alive to appear in MGS1 and MGS2. If the player goes out of his way to kill Ocelot, however, an "Ocelot Is Dead: Time Paradox" screen appears, and the voice of Colonel Campbell chastises Snake for his rash actions. This will also occur if the player kills other storyline or mission important people such as EVA or Sokolov.
- The passage of real-world time affects gameplay. The player's food will spoil if the game is untouched for longer than a week, and the major boss The End can be killed in the same way: he will die of old age waiting for Snake to show up. Incidentally, players may also snipe The End immediately after a cinematic cutscene. This skips the battle entirely, but forces the player to fight troops from the Ocelot unit in The End's place at Sokrovenno instead.
- Like at the start of Metal Gear Solid 2, the player is asked a question before commencing play, this time it is on their preferred MGS title. If MGS2 is selected, Snake will be wearing the Raiden/Raikov mask at the beginning of the Virtuous Mission. When he is contacted by Major Zero, the major asks why Snake is wearing the mask before eventually saying something similar to "Take the mask off, you're already starting to annoy me" in reference to the disdain Raiden receives from many MGS fans. When the protagonist's name appears on screen with the name of the voice actor, instead of saying Naked Snake it says Jack.
- During the Virtuous Mission, if Snake approaches the room Sokolov is being held while wearing the Raiden/Raikov mask, he will be unable to go through the door and rescue Sokolov. Major Zero will explain that Sokolov doesn't like the mask, which is probably also a reference to the disdain Raiden receives from many fans of the MGS series.
- When fighting The Sorrow, the appearance of the various ghosts will change based on the method used to kill them. If for example a guard was killed by fire, the ghost will also appear on fire and if a guard was shot into the crotch, the ghost will walk down the river muttering "I'm no good to anyone now." while holding his crotch. If Snake killed Raikov instead of knocking him unconscious or putting him to sleep, he will also appear at the river...naked and holding his crotch in a manner similar to Raiden in the end of Sons of Liberty.
- In Rokovoj Bereg (where the battle with The Boss takes place), there are three white-colored snakes near the fallen tree trunks: Solid, Liquid, and Solidus (the names of Big Boss' offspring).
- A radio conversation mocks the very concept behind the Metal Gear itself. In the conversation, the character Sigint explains that a walking, bipedal tank is a ridiculous concept from both a tactical and engineering point of view.
- On Granin's desk is a model of Metal Gear Ray and, in the background, a model of Jehuty from Zone of the Enders. Blueprints for Metal Gear Rex can also be seen. Near his desk is a photo of him standing next to a figure that looks like Otacon; presumably this is his foreign friend, Otacon's grandfather.
- The Timeline that is listed in the manual mentions Otacon's Grandfather. Despite the fact that this is the only reference to Hal Emmerich or his codename, the Otaku Convention (From which his codename is derived) copyright information is listed in the credits. The only actual mentioning of Otacon's name is during the "Snake vs. Ape" introduction.
- By opening the survival viewer and selecting the cure option, the player can view a characters' medical history. When Snake has EVA with him her medical history can be viewed and includes such interesting items as a breast enhancement and proctitis.
- Volgin says "Kuwabara, Kuwabara" when it rains in the game. This is a reference to a Chinese/Japanese superstition: 'Kuwabara' literally means "mulberry field" in Japanese, and according to legend mulberry trees cannot be struck by lightning. Saying "Kuwabara, Kuwabara" is supposed to protect the speaker from lightning. Volgin does not chant "Kuwabara, Kuwabara" at his final boss battle, and ironically dies from a lightning bolt.
- Roughly translated from Russian, "Rokovoj Bereg" means "Fatal Coast".
- The Virtuous Mission takes place on August 24 1964, Hideo Kojima's first birthday. Originally it was to take place a year earlier (on the day of his birth), but was pushed foward so references to the Kennedy assassination could be included.
- Snake has a true affection for his customized M1911A1, as seen in a radio conversation with Sigint while talking to him on the radio as well as the cutscene in which he first receives it. He describes it as "perhaps the finest weapon he has ever handled."
- The cigar gas spray is homage to the 007 film, The Spy Who Loved Me.
- At the conclusion of the Virtuous Mission, just prior to Naked Snake being thrown from the bridge by The Boss, he is seen having grabbed her bandana. After Naked Snake is washed ashore, he wears the bandana for the remainder of the game. This is likely intended to be the same bandana worn by Solid Snake during the events of the other Metal Gear Solid games.
- After finding camo, or getting a boss' camo, call Sigint. There are sometimes some funny reactions. Also try face paint.
- If you hold up the right guard with your knife, you will get a special frequency that will connect you to Healing Radio.
- After being knocked off the bridge by The Boss in the Virtuous Mission if the player presses R1 and looks to Snake's right they will see the skeleton of The Sorrow
- The Liver spots on The End's head appear and disappear depending on how tired he is
Twilight Princess
[edit]- The night sky is an accurate representation of the real night sky. Stars are the correct brightness, and includes constellations such as Orion and Cassiopeia. The moon moves, but the stars stay still.[citation needed]
- Some of the howling stone songs are songs from previous The Legend of Zelda games. The songs are: Song of Healing from Majora's Mask, Requiem of Spirit and Prelude of Light both from Ocarina of Time. Another song, The Wind Waker, resembles, but is not the main theme of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The other two are original Twilight Princess songs, one of which is the Hyrule Field main theme. In the Sacred Grove, there is another howling stone found that has a Triforce on it (as opposed to the others which have a Sheikah symbol on them). This stone plays Zelda's Lullaby from Ocarina of Time.
- In the fishing hole, Hena has a picture of the fishing pond owner from Ocarina of Time, whom she wishes to be her ancestor. If one quickly looks over at Hena after looking at the Legendary Fisherman from Ocarina of Time, she will be scratching her back, just as the Fisherman in Ocarina of Time was always scratching his back.
- Fyer has a Bullet Bill on his sleeve, a reference to the Super Mario games, where Bullet Bills were enemies that were shot out of cannons, harking back to Fyer's main occupation as the manager of a cannon ride.
- When Fanadi is reading Link’s fortune, she is not speaking gibberish, but is actually saying sentences backwards. When she gives his career fortune, she says, "What am I talking about" backwards, and when she gives his love fortune, she is saying "Wait...loading takes awhile" backwards.
- If the player tries to light their lantern next to Barnes in his shop, he'll scold the player. If one tries to light it (seemingly) out of Barnes' sight, he'll pound his desk with his fist, causing water to fall on them.
- If Link speaks to the Goron standing out in the observation deck in Hyrule Castle Town after the castle has been sealed, he confesses that he also sees the barrier and that he has kept it "a secret to everybody." This is a famous line from the original Legend of Zelda game, heard when the player encounters a friendly Moblin.
- If the player attacks a Cucco, instead of it attacking back (as in previous Zelda games), the player will temporarily take control of it.
- Twilight Princess is the first The Legend of Zelda game in which Link is right-handed. He is only right-handed in the Wii version, whereas he keeps to tradition in the GameCube version by holding his sword in his left hand. Due to Link's reversed dexterity in the Wii version, the entire Hyrule overworld has also been horizontally flipped, as well all characters and enemies. Because of this, the sun rises in the west during gameplay.
- Hyrule in Twilight Princess is geographically similar to Hyrule in Ocarina of Time, but expanded.[citation needed]
- The Oocca race bear a striking similarity to the strange birds seen in M. C. Escher’s painting Other World.
- Twilight Princess is the first The Legend of Zelda game in which Link opens the doors in a dungeon himself, rather than watching them open on their own. Dirt will fall off when first opening a door, but it will be clean all times after that.
- A magic meter was originally planned but eventually dropped from the game. The magic meter can still be seen in a screenshot on the back of the Wii version box. Nintendo also seems to have forgotten to remove the green Chuchus from the game, though drinking the green potion made from them has no description and doesn't do anything anymore.[citation needed]
- Midna can be heard humming her own theme song in a cutscene shortly after Link acquires the Ordon Sword and Shield.
- The "Mortal Draw" Technique Link learns is actually based in the Japanese martial art of Iaidō, wherein the primary goal is to land a lethal strike straight out of the scabbard.
- The second boss-theme of Stallord is a remix of the boss-themes of King Dodongo and Volvagia in Ocarina of Time. [1]
- In Kamigami no Triforce, the official manga for Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past when Link enters the Dark World, he begins to transform into a wolf similar to in Twilight Princess.
