Julius Caesar kommt in Genf[2] or Julius Caesar arrives in Geneva[3] is a mosaic depicting Julius Caesar as he arrived in Geneva for the first time in 58 B.C.. Caesar is belived to be the first person to have mentioned Geneva in historcial texts.[4] It is one of the few depictions of Caesar in mosaics, and is located in The Old Arsenal on the opposite side of the town hall,[5] sitting alike a fresco, being the first of three artworks showing iconic moments in Genevan history, above some antique cannons.[6][7][8]
History
[edit]The mosaic and it's two sister artworks were created by Swiss artist Alexandre Cingria before his death in 1945.[9] It was originally intended to decorate one of the walls of the Geneve City Hall (Hôtel de Ville)[10] but was eventually placed in the arsenal in 1949.[11]
The artwork is a tourist attraction for the city[12] and held in high regard among the local people.[13]
