Mordecai is one of two fictional main characters in the animated television comedy series Regular Show. He first appeared in the non-canon animated short film 2 in the AM PM, which was created in 2006. Mordecai was created and voiced by cartoonist J.G. Quintel, who based him on his personality.
Mordecai is best friends with Rigby, who is another main character of the show. He works at the local park, which is also where he lives. He is mild-mannered and relaxed, and unlike Rigby, he displays patience, responsibility, and intelligence. He has also made a number of appearances in other media and in Regular Show merchandising lines.
The character has achieved popularity among children and adults, and the character has also won a PAAFTJ award in 2012. He has made his latest appearance in the fourth season of the series.
Role in Regular Show
[edit]Mordecai is one of the two main characters, the other being Rigby the raccoon, with whom he is best friends. He lives and works in a local park, simply referred to as "The Park". Like Rigby, Mordecai lacks clothing, plays copious amounts of video games, and drinks coffee and soda. Mordecai has a secret crush on Margaret, a red-breasted robin that works at a coffee shop.
Mordecai is more mature than Rigby, and often puts up with his laziness and immaturity. Mordecai tends to be much more friendly than Rigby, and has many relationships with others. While Mordecai naturally dislikes doing work, he trys to keep his job and keep a good reputation.
Development
[edit]The character of Mordecai first appeared as a transformation of a drug store cashier in J.G. Quintel's animated short film, 2 in the AM PM. He intended to create a series that grew out of his experiances at college. Mordecai embodies Quintel during his college years: "That’s that time when you’re hanging out with your friends and getting into stupid situations, but you’re also taking it seriously enough."[1] Quintel also provides the voice of Mordecai. In commenting on his voice acting, Quintel noted how he has an easy going nature and never yells in real life, so had to learn how to yell as the Mordecai character.[2]
Reception
[edit]Mordecai has received generally positive acclaim from critics and audiences. Devin D. O'Leary of Alibi.com's "Idiot Box" column praised Mordecai and the other characters, stating that they added to the show's humor.[3] While PopMatters critic Chris Conaton gave the show a six-out-of-ten rating, his review praised the characters of Mordecai and Rigby and their voice acting.[4]
In 2012, J.G. Quintel and Mordecai won a PAAFTJ Television Award for "Best Voice Acting in an Animated Series" for the episode "Eggscellent".[5]
Appearances in Other Media and Merchandising
[edit]The characters of Regular Show have made several appearances in other media. Mordecai appeared as a playable character in the iOS game Regular Show: Nightmare-athon, which was released in 2012.[6] Jazwares has also released an assortment of merchandise, including 10 inch-tall action figures, "Collectable Figures", "80's Bobbleheads", "Pullback Custom Cruisers", and "Wrestling Buddies".[7]
