The 1893 New South Wales Rugby Football season was the 20th season of the Sydney Rugby Premiership. This was the fourth competition for the Royal Agricultural Society Challenge Shield and the second competition for the Association Cricket Ground Cup. The football season lasted from May to September. The premiership was won for the ninth time by Sydney University who also won the both the Association Cricket Ground Cup and the Royal Agricultural Society Challenge Shield. This was the third time that the University had won the shield and therefore they were awarded it permanently. Both finals saw University playing against the Randwick Football Club. The games were very close with the Varsity winning both matches 3 points to nil. The Junior Badges saw Glebe defeat Newtown in the final. The Second Junior Badges were won by Surry who defeated the previously undefeated Grosvenor in the final. The Third Junior Badges saw Willoughby playing against Royal Oak in the final with Willoughby winning the match.
Teams
[edit]For 1893, 7 entries were submitted to the Union for the Senior competition.[1] Promoted to the top ranks for the new season were Carlton and the Pirates. Both clubs had climbed through the lower grades and had displayed success. The Carlton club were the current First Junior champions and had also won the 1891 Second Junior competition. The Pirates Football Club had shown much promise over a number of seasons. They had fielded multiple teams across a number of grades with the First Junior team finishing Runner-up for the last three seasons.
Two former Senior clubs did not enter for the new season. Zealandia had lost a number of prominent players to other clubs, including former captain George Lusk, and decided to concentrate on the Junior Badges. The same issue faced the Strathfield club who had former captain, Henry Braddon, retire from the game and other players drafted into other clubs. A motion was put forward by the Zealandia club disapproving of the actions of clubs poaching players from rivals.[2]
At a meeting of the Sydney University Football Club, the results of both Senior teams was analysed. During the previous season, the A team had performed exceptionally and finished runner-up to the eventual champions. The B team fared much worse, finishing the season at the bottom of the table. It was decided by the committee to enter only one team into the Senior competition in the future.[3]

Season Summary
[edit]Sydney University carried all before it this season, having won the Association Cricket Ground Cup, the Agricultural Society Trophy and the Badge Medals. As well as taking home the Association Cricket Ground trophy, the club earnt the right to keep the Agricultural Society Trophy having won it for the third time. University had the best of the Badges matches loosing only one game and scoring more points than any of the other teams. In both finals, the Varsity met a strong Randwick team. Both matches were close with the students winning each match by 3 points to 0. Despite displaying less control of the ball compared to past seasons, University saw fine individual efforts from its players. Chief amongst these was HP Abbott who was considered the best footballer in the colony. He single handedly won the Semi Final against Wallaroo, kicking the two goals, and was instrumental in the try in the Final against Randwick.[4]
Randwick
Wallaroo
The Pirates inflicted the only defeat on eventual champions, Univeristy.

By the time that the tourists had returned from Queensland, a third and final match had been arranged against a New South Wales representative team. After the results of the previous match, it was expected that the game would be a close one. It was believed that New South Wales would once again defeat the visitors. It the lead up to the game, Sydney experienced much rain which left the ground soft and muddy before the kick-off. m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m
