Clathrate hydrates are interesting structures in which water 'cages' enclose other molecules. It is possible to store fuels like hydrogen or hydrocarbons in clathrate hydrates. I've heard it suggested that clathrates would be a good storage medium for hydrogen to be used as transportation fuel. In a given volume at a given temperature, a higher density of hydrogen could be stored in clathrates than as a pure gas (though I may not be remembering correctly).
