LTTE cadres launch a large attack on the town of Muttur and three nearby Army detachments at Kattaparichchan, Selvanagar, and Mahindapura. The LTTE infiltrates into Muttur, and security forces initially withdraw from parts of the town, but fight back and repulse the attacks. Peace is restored in Muttur by August 5.
Government troops take control of the key town of Sampur and surrounding areas. The LTTE spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan tells the BBC that the LTTE “tactically withdrew” from the town
LTTE cadres attack Army Forward Defence Lines (FDL). The Army eventually repulses the attack and takes the LTTE 1st FDL. The tigers fall back to their second FDL. Government claims 35 Soldiers and 150 LTTE cadres are killed.
The new United States ambassador to Sri Lanka Robert Blake says "The United States is committed to helping Sri Lanka to fight terrorism and we demonstrated this in number of ways." "We are helping the Sri Lankan Military to confront terrorism. We have also consistently called on the LTTE to renounce terrorism and violence in words and deeds and commit themselves to a negotiated settlement"
