Snek01's guideline for WikiProject Gastropods
This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
This page in a nutshell: It summarizes advice by User:Snek01 to editors of gastropods articles. Perhaps it can became a guideline in the future. |
Some practical advice for better standardization of gastropod articles.
Name of article
[edit]If the name of the genus is already in use for any other article, add the word (gastropod). Example: Bithynia (gastropod)
Every extant species of gastropod deserves its own article. For fossil species, make a species article only when the species is reasonably well defined.
Intro
[edit]- Use wikilink freshwater snail insted of freshwater snail.
- Use wikilink sea snail insted of sea snail.
- Use wikilink sea slug insted of sea slug.
- Use wikilink land snail insted of land snail.
- Use wikilink land slug insted of land slug.
Taxobox
[edit]Every article deserves a taxobox with all the ranks listed between class and superfamilia.
There always should be a genus reference in the genus article; otherwise apply no-gastropod-genus-ref.
If there are synonyms and you do not know the synonyms, apply no synonym.
Every | binomial_authority =
should have its authority and the authority reference. (Authority is an exact reference to the publication in which the species was originally described.)
If there are synonyms, it is usually practical to use WoRMS as a reference in the | synonyms_ref =
Redirects
[edit]If there are synonyms, it is a very good idea to create redirects from all the synonyms.
Sections
[edit]The preferred order and names of sections are:
- Taxonomy
- Distribution
- Description
- Reproductive system
- Ecology
- Habitat
- Feeding habits
- Life cycle
- Parasites and predators (or separate sections Parasites, Predators)
- Human use
Text of article
[edit]If there is one or more binomial names in the article, use a wikilink for the binomial name, even if there is no article for it yet. I other words, do not simply link to the genus because the genus article already exists.)
References
[edit]Use papers published in peer-reviewed journals and monographs as references. https://scholar.google.com
External links
[edit]Add Commons category for each family article, genus article, and species article. External links should always be in the article, and when there is any external link, including Taxonbar template.
Taxonbar template is recommended especially if here is any corresponding link. It is certainly recommended for all marine gastropods and for all gastropods that have record on NCBI.
Categories
[edit]Articles are categorized in the category of its family. The category of the family uses the scientific name. Every gastropod family deserve its own category on Wikipedia.
There is no need a generic subcategory within a family that contain less than 200 species. This means that a family with less than 200 species should have only one container category.
Prehistoric gastropods should be categorized within the Category:Prehistoric gastropods or within its prehistoric family category (if the family is completely †) or within its prehistorc genus category (if a resonably large category like that exists).
Lists
[edit]Provide a reference for every species in the list.
In lists by country use the name List of marine molluscs of ... or List of non-marine molluscs of ... sensu Outline of gastropods#Lists of marine molluscs by country.
Images
[edit]There always should be a caption for all images, including the ones in the taxobox. The most simple caption is like this: "Helix pomatia shell" or "A live Helix pomatia".
When you add images, change the parameter in the WikiProject Gastropods template from needs-photo=yes to needs-photo=no.
Talk page
[edit]There should be a WikiProject Gastropods template in all articles in Category:Gastropods and in its subcategories. Not so in the talkpages of articles on malacologists.
Images on Commons
[edit]Images identified to the species level should be adds into the proper category of the species. Each species deserve its own category on Commons.
Categorize images according to the subject:
- Gastropoda eggs
- Gastropoda sex
- Digestive system of Gastropoda
- Gastropoda radula
- Reproductive system of Gastropoda
- Nervous system of Gastropoda
- Excretory system of Gastropoda
- Operculum
Use standard position of shell like this (when applicable):
-
apertural view
-
abapertural (or lateral) view
-
umbilical view
Use scale for all images of the shell. It is also useful to use the same image ratio (width/height) for shell images:
Categorize images according to the method:
- Scanning electron microscopic images of Gastropoda
- SVG Gastropoda
- Gastropoda on stamps
Categorize images according to the background color:
- Gastropoda with black background
- Gastropoda on white background - those images are useful in cladograms
- Gastropoda with transparent background
Categorize images according to the source journal (or source book)
- Images from Journal de Conchyliologie
- Images from Manual of Conchology
- Images from Manual of the New Zealand Mollusca
- ...and so on. Every journal deserves a category like this on Commons
Categorize images according to the author:
- Use the Creator template:
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
Who deserves a creator template: Every person that has their own article on Wikipedia. Every author that described a species usually deserves a creator template, because it has records on Wikispecies and on Wikidata.
For example template categorized automatically images into the "Works by Wilhelm Kobelt" category.
For maps use
- Category:Distribution maps of Gastropoda
- If the image comes from the Internet Archive or from the Biodiversity Heritage Library, do not extract them from PDFs (they are in poor quality). Crop them from original JPG files in highest possible resolution.
Videos are within
- Category:Videos of Gastropoda
