Tuzrakter is an independent cultural centre in the heart of Budapest. Having been evicted by the state from its original situation in an abandoned warehouse, the centre is now based in 5300m2 of old primary school on Hegedu Street. Containing artists studios and exhibition, performance and cafe areas the centre acts as a platform for artists of many mediums and a grass roots community for an alternative lifestyle.

Aim

Tuzrakter primarily focuses on the arts in a social context. The aim, as stated by one of the founders, Etienne Samen , is 'to give open and democratic opportunities to emerging artists, away from the commercial nature of the art world and tackle social and political issues in a theoretical and pragmatic way through arts and academia' (sic).

The building and it's contents

Within the building are twenty seven studios, three theatres, a concert hall, a cafe, two exhibition spaces, two circus practice rooms, two NGO offices and a large courtyard which acts as an extension of the cafe in summer and a space for performances.

Activities

Events of a wide variety of forms are held on an almost daily basis throughout the year. These range from music, including free jazz, noise, jam bands and dub, to theatre, dance, circus, literature, film screenings, lectures, club nights, workshops and more. Various festivals occur each year, including the annual month long 'Art Against Discrimination' festival in May, and the szinvàltàsok theatre festival in November.The centre coordinates various projects revolving around social issues, with programs involving refugees, orphans and children taking place in and outside of the centre.
