Areas of Soil Erosion Hazard, Queensland (ASEH) was a statutory natural resource management (NRM) program that resulted in extensive construction of contour banks on the Darling Downs in the period 1973 to 1986. The policy was introduced as a response to major erosion events on the Darling Downs in late 1972 and early 1973. Between 1973 and 1975, the Bjelke-Petersen Government declared 11 shires on the Darling Downs and two shires in the Coastal Burnett region to be ASEH under the Soil Conservation Act 1965 (Qld). The declarations enabled the Soil Conservation Branch of the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (QDPI) to prepare plans for co-ordinated erosion control works on a catchment basis. The plans were binding on landholders and local authorities alike, and works were subsidized by the state to facilitate co-operation.
