Being bold is important on Wikipedia.
Proposed Topics
[edit]My first proposed topic is the issue of the Saskatoon Freezing Deaths, aka the Starlight Tours. This refers to a long-term pattern of police brutality against indigenous Canadian peoples in Saskatchewan, Canada, specifically Saskatoon. In the case of Darell Night, a survivor of a Starlight Tour, the two police officers who attempted to murder him were convicted of unlawful confinement.[1] This is in contradiction to the current state of the Wikipedia page, “Saskatoon freezing deaths” and I would additionally like to add a section regarding police response. It may be more beneficial to contribute instead to add a section to the “Indigenous peoples in Canada” Wikipedia page regarding police brutality in Canada against indigenous Canadians more generally. This could include specific instances of police murders of indigenous individuals using local news clips as well as scholarly findings should I take this path.[2]
My second option would be to add a page on contemporary First Nations art. The parent page to this would be the “Indigenous peoples in Canada” Wikipedia page, which contains a “Visual art” subsection within the “Culture” section. There are several different individuals who represent different tribes in their artwork and who could be featured on a Wikipedia page regarding modern indigenous Canadian art, highlighted in a CBC radio feature.[3]
