User:Skittleys/Redirect templates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I find that the current categorisation of redirect templates is horrifying, and that the information on WHEN to use each is too scattered (it seems that the current recommendation is to include this info on the category page). So, I've made my own. If someone wants to upload it to the WP: namespace, feel free!

This listing will include all the redirect templates, including ones that redirect to another redirect template.

Use this template when the target article title contains a diacritical mark and the source page is Romanized.

Spelling, grammar and punctuation variations
[edit]
Template Usage notes Redirects
{{R from alternative spelling}}
category links talk edit
Use when the source title is a spelling variation of the target title. Note that there may be a more specific template below. See notes on {{R from misspelling}} below.

{{R from misspelling}}
category links talk edit
Do NOT use this template for a redirect based on the spelling used in another dialect. For example, neither favour not favor is a misspelling. Be sure to read and understand all of the following before declaring a title misspelled: MOS:SPELL, WP:ENGVAR, English plural and American and British English spelling differences.

This template is only used for differences in spelling. Punctuation and grammar are covered by other templates. Grammar *may* use this template in conjunction with another; for example, potatos uses both this template and {{R from plural}}.

{{R from plural}}
category links talk edit
{{R to singular}}

Title modifications
[edit]

These templates are used for redirects with a very similar title. See also #Full title variations below for variations where the title changes completely.

Template Usage notes Redirects
{{R from full name}}
category links talk edit
Use to redirect to the full name of the person or object.
Examples:

{{R from an incomplete name}}
category links talk edit
Use to redirect to a full version of the article title. For example, Blu-spec leads to Blue-spec CD.

{{R from modification}}
category links talk edit
Use when the difference between the titles is a rearrangement of the words, the addition/removal of unimportant words, a change in punctuation, etc. For example, Toronto F.C. redirects to Toronto FC.

Please also see {{R from an incomplete name}} and {{R from full name}}.

{{R mod}}

{{R from abbreviation}}
category links talk edit
Use when the source page contains an abbreviation of a term in the target article's title. For acronyms, use {{R from acronym}}, even though it redirects to this template. {{R from acronym}}

{{R from acronym}}
category links talk edit
Use when the source page contains an acronym of a term in the target article's title.

Full title variations

[edit]

Note: listed here are only the templates that are for general use. Full title changes that only have specific applications (e.g., {{R from historic name}}, which is meant for places only) are listed in the corresponding section. Changes that are only a variation of the target article title should use one of the templates listed above.

Template Usage notes Redirects
{{R from alternative name}}
category links talk edit
This is for NOUNS, and for titles that are correct alternatives. For example, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals leads to AstraZeneca.

{{R alternate name}}
{{R alternative name}}
{{R from other name}}

{{R from related word}}
category links talk edit
Use to redirect to a related word, NOT a modification of the same word. For example, antonym (redirects to opposite (semantics)) should use this template, but AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals (redirects to AstraZeneca) should not.

Template Usage notes Redirects
{{R from secret identity}}

Redirects based on sections

[edit]
Template Usage notes Redirects
{{R to section}}
category links talk edit
Use when a topic is fully covered in its own section of another article. Note that these redirects should ALWAYS point to the SPECIFIC section, and not just to the general article. For example, Reverse Cowgirl leads to Woman on top (sex position)#Reverse Cowgirl, and Riddle family leads to Lord Voldemort#Riddle family. This is most often used to redirect to characters who merit their own section in an article but do not merit their own article.

See also {{R from song}}.
