Flight and crew

The aircraft serving Flight 4590 was a turbojet Aérospatiale-British Aircraft Corporation Concorde, registration F-BTSC. It made its first flight on 31 January 1975 and was purchased by Air France on 23 October 1980, less than 20 years before the accident.

There were nine crew members and 100 passengers on board the Concorde. Eight of the nine crew members were French and the remaining crew member was German. Ninety-six passengers were German tourists en route to New York for a cruise. The crew consisted of Captain Christian Marty, 54, First Officer Jean Marcot, 50, Flight Engineer Gilles Jardinaud, 58, and six flight attendants.

Accident

Shortly after commencing its take-off run, the Concorde ran over a titanium alloy strip left from a Continental Airlines McDonnell Douglass DC-10-30, destroying one of the Concorde’s tyres. The Concorde crashed into the Hôtelissimo Les Relais Bleus Hotel, near. All 109 passengers and crew on board died and the aircraft was destroyed on impact.
