Bunyoro University (BNYU) is a university under development in Uganda. It is one of the public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country.[1]

Location

[edit]

The main campus of the university would be located on approximately 20 acres (8 ha) of land, adjacent to and on land formerly owned by Bulera Core Primary Teachers College, in the Busiisi Division of the City of Hoima.[2] This is approximately 7 kilometres (4 mi) southeast of the city's central business district.[3]

The university is expected to operate with Kigumba Petroleum Institute in Kiryandongo District and Birembo Technical Institute in Kakumiro District, as constituent colleges.[2]

History

[edit]

In 2018, Yoweri Museveni, the head of state of Uganda wrote to the Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports directing the ministry to "plan to have at least one public university in each sub-region that was recognized as a district of Uganda at independence in 1962". A parliamentary resolution to establish a public university in Bunyoro had been passed in 2015.[1]

After lengthy deliberations among stakeholders, a decision was made to establish the main campus of the university on the campus of Bulera Core Primary Teachers College (BCPTC), with the university campus occupying 20 acres (8.1 ha) and the BCPTC Occupying the remaining 22 acres (8.9 ha).[1][2]

Construction

[edit]

The selected engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor is the UPDF Engineering Brigade, led by Lieutenant Colonel Peter Kidemuka. Groundbreaking is scheduled for 15 November 2024.[2] In May 2024, the Ugandan parliament allocated USh30 billion (approx. US$8.11 million) to establish both Bunyoro University and Busoga University as tertiary public institutions of higher education.[4][5]

Academics
