Namaskaram. This is Shyam Diwakar and am working at Amrita University.

Shyam Diwakar

Since February 2009, I am the lab head of Computational Neuroscience Laboratory[1], a Faculty fellow at the Amrita Center for International Programs and an Assistant Professor at Amrita School of Biotechnology[2], Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

I have been a co-investigator of the VALUE (Virtual and Accessible Laboratories for Universalizing Education[3]); a major virtual labs initiative supported by Sakshat mission of MHRD[4], Government of India, and Principle Investigator of few other projects funded by Department of Science and Technology and Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

I received a Ph. D. in Computational Sciences[5] from University of Milan, Italy and have worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher[6] at the department of General Physiology, University of Pavia, Italy. My postdoctoral research was supported by INGENIO grant[7] from Regione Lombardia and SENSOPAC grant from EU framework 7.

Before doctoral studies, I worked as a Research Assistant at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, on Machine Learning and Intelligence for two years[8]. Have co-authored a book titled “Insights into Data Mining”[9] which was published by Prentice Hall, PHI, December 2005 and authored another book on Computational Neuroscience[10].

Was elevated to the role of a Senior Member of IEEE[11] and am a faculty member of Organization for Computational Neurosciences (OCNS) and a life member of Indian Academy of Neuroscience. I have organized, participated and presented in various meetings and workshops in Europe and Asia and have also served as an invited speaker in conferences and graduate schools in Europe and India[12][13].

Currently my team's research uses principles from Electrical Engineering and Informatics to study cerebellum and its functioning[14][15][16][17]. Research includes study on how noise is represented in extracellular neuronal tissue besides developing multi-scale mathematical models of the cerebellum granular layer. The current work at the lab is on Computational Neurophysiology[18], Neuromorphic Hardware and Bio-Robotics[19] besides pedagogical techniques for enhancing Biotechnology laboratory education through ICT[20][21].

I also volunteer for Embracing the World.

Embracing The World

[edit]

Embracing the World is a global network of regional humanitarian organizations inspired by the India-based humanitarian initiatives of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math[22]. Embracing the World exists to help alleviate the burden of the world’s poor through helping to meet each of their five basic needs[23] — food, shelter, healthcare, education, and livelihood — wherever and whenever possible. Amma, the founder of the charities and Embracing The World are especially focused on helping the poor[24] and to meet these needs in the aftermath of major disasters[25][26][27]. They also work in the fields of environmental conservation and sustainability[28] to help protect the planet.
