Riffe was an unincorporated town in Lewis County, Washington, southeast of Mossyrock. The community was flooded after the build of the Mossyrock Dam.
Etymology
[edit]The community was first known as Baugh when the town was located 2.5 miles (4.0 km) farther up the Cowlitz River. Eventually moved to the area which was flooded due to the dam, it was renamed in honor of Floyd Riffe approximately in 1897.[1]
History
[edit]The community was home to one of the first recognized automobile stage operators in the county, Crocket Rose, who drove a Canadian Patterson coach between Mossyrock and Swofford beginning in 1909. The underpowered vehicle used natural horsepower during climbs over the terrain, and the roughly 6-mile (9.7 km) trip took more than a day.[2]
Flooding
[edit]The town remains submerged under Riffe Lake, the reservoir created by the Mossyrock Dam.
