Eiko Hanamura (花村えい子, Hanamura Eiko, November 9, 1924 – December 3, 2020) was a Japanese manga artist.

Life

[edit]

She was born in 1924 in Saitama Prefecture.

Hanamura made her debut as a manga artist in 1958 with the short story "Murasaki no Yōsei" in the anthology Niji. The rental book market for shōjo manga was then booming with short story anthologies and provided a platform for many young female artists to start their careers.[1]

After the decile of the rental book market, like many others, she moved to working for commercial manga magazines instead. This move was also encouraged by her rental book editor, as working for commercial magazines was better paid.[1] In 1968, she had a small hit with Kiri no Naka no Shōjo in Margaret magazine.

In the 1970s, she switched to mainly drawing josei manga for an adult female audience.

Reception

[edit]

In 1989, she received the Japan Cartoonists Association Award for her complete work.
