Impact of mobile phones on our youth By Muhammad Shahbaz Atish Riphah International University
Abstract
the mobile phone has lead to changed dynamics in the family, with issues of safety and surveillance from a parental perspective leading to negotiated changing freedoms for young people. The impact of the mobile phone on the school as an institution has not however, received as much research. Disruptions to lessons, incidences of cheating and bullying are some of the negative impacts .video and camera features, teenagers now have more capability to record and report any criminal event they have witnessed. These make them into valuable witnesses that would greatly help authorities solve crime faster.
Introduction
Many professors and school campuses are starting to realize the advantages of a cell phone. With a cell phone, the students could actually make organizers and even do their projects and research works with the cell phones ability to connect to the Internet. Some of them even take advantage of the different educational games found in cell phones. With all these reasons, the youth actually gets more encouragement to initiate his learning !
Many cell phones function as small computers, with Internet capabilities, games, pictures, videos, texting and email. Cell phones for youth are mobile communication devices that they can use in a wide variety of ways. There are many concerns about the impact of the constant media input that cell phones provide for youth, but there are many advantages as well. I think Cell phones are becoming to today's youth what rock and roll was to the youth in the 1960's. Approximately 80% of all teenagers have cell phones worldwide, and have developed their own language and social groups away from the prying eyes of their parents.
Even teenager got addiction from them. All night packages, sms packages and that entire staff are making the student life a hell.
In our youth segment the majority is student community that is spell bounded by these packages. They are losing the essence of their profession/studies. They are derailing and deviating themselves. They are getting away from their goals, destinies and motives. Their minds are becoming stagnant and static. Creativity and innovation is blocked by the consistent telephonic conversations spread over the whole of night. The mobile companies have every right to work out innovative packages offering greater value of money to their customers. But they should not making profits by compromising on the interests of the young generation. Unfortunately the countries like Pakistan, India and Bangladesh have strong cultural values, norms and customs that are easily fettered by the western cultural onslaught. Our youth is concentrating on some bad choices. In this global village, firstly our youth was allured to divert their attention towards the internet. They have changed a lot by the usage of internet. A few of them have inclined for knowledge, information, awareness and exposure but the majority of them appear to have misused the internet. Aspects of Research:
Youth health . Telecom . Mobile phone and free packages .
The Advantages of Cell Phones to Youth
As a parent with a child or teenager who insists that you get her a cell phone, you likely have some well-founded reservations. However, while you keep track of the natural dangers associated with young people’s irresponsible use of cell phones, be sure to consider some of the advantages of cell phone use, too. Your balanced view has a powerful influence on your child.
Security
Cell phones offer peace of mind and security for both you and your child. Think of it as a portable 911 calling device. You will also have immediate communication access to your child, and she will have immediate communication access to you. If she locks herself out of your home or locks her keys in a car, she can get help immediately. Cell phones send pings to cell towers every 5 to 10 minutes, which makes it possible for police to track your child's location should she ever need help and is unable to use her cell phone.
Accountability
I think Youth are especially susceptible to dangerous behavior when their parents don't know where they are. Know for sure whether your teen is at an off-limits party, the home of a questionable friend, at a notorious club when you use a GPS tracking feature available through most mobile phone carriers. Tell your teen that you can find his location at any time. This will give him a sense of accountability and an extra incentive to do the right thing. Sure, he could try to lose you along with his phone, but chances are he'll want to keep his phone close by at all times.
Time Management Tool Use your child's desire for a personal cell phone as an opportunity to teach her self-discipline, social etiquette and effective use of communication tools. Give her weekly limits to her talk time and number of text messages and take away privileges when she goes over. Of course, reward her when she keeps within the limits. This helps her learn how to prioritize her time and keep an agreement. Social Interaction Cell phones to youth are direct lines to social life. Help your child tune in to the lives of his peers. Teach him how to use a cell phone to encourage his friends and grow relationships. Warn him of what constitutes irresponsible cell phone use and urge him to report illegal activity immediately. Connection
I think between text messages that encouraged youth to vote and actual voting activity. This is an example of how media outlets and other organizations use text messaging as a powerful way to communicate with young people. Help your teen keep connected to the world around him when you give him access to it.
Late Night Calling Packages And Pakistani Youth
The late night calling packages, its impact on the youth of Pakistan and who is responsible for this situation ?
I think Cell phones nowadays have become symbol of independence – for our youth that mobile phone helps them to develop their own language and social groups away from the prying eyes of their parents. It has become Status Symbol or what people say Fashion statement – It is a way that people wear their phone in a style, color, cost and features and feel that a phone can enhance their looks. Although mobile phones have long been a part of the business community, they are quietly becoming entrenched in personal lives. Cell phones play a crucial role in relationships among a group of young people, Mobile phones also influence the trend toward relaxing the traditional amount of contact permitted before marriage. Cell phone is also in the use of people who are working environment and always remain on the go.
It is privacy and not mobility that matters. Most youth have cell phone conversations in their bedroom. Lets have a look on few needs of new breed (Youth) that have been forcing them to get addicted to this cell phone night packages, the need to make their identity and to build “social and emotional ties”. The shrinking size of present day families explain why the youth today feel the need to communicate with virtual brothers and sisters.
Youngsters have been using cell phones to form friendships and social groups away from their families, feeling that these phones give them privacy that we would not otherwise have. As cell phone use becomes even more widespread, communication between parents and their kids may become even more impersonal.
I saying (romance is in the air) appears to be true. In today’s world, it is mobile phones which are carrying the messages of love. Youngsters are using mobile phones to maintain personal and relationships.
dreamy our new generation, we free night packages services provided by our Cellular Companies have become a great pleasure/encouragement to people like who aren’t responsible at all, it seems they are announced to spoil the future of our youth, just give it a thought which kind a people avail these services and what they do? Whole night they spent in useless, ungraceful conversation it’s all beyond morals.
The immature generation has become addicted to avail these kind a packages. These kind portable platform providers are taking away our youth from family/Cultural/Traditional/Religious values, they don’t even care about their health though they know how these radiation would be harmful as for as continuous use is concerned. The Cellular Companies should make some standards so they can provide such services which can be of use to make the youths future bright and should consider the social impact before announcing any such service, they should offer some (Mobile Learning) services they are behind the race of announcing free night packages, low rates for one special number. No distrust most of the parents are equally responsible for this attitude in our new generation, in previous age what kind of environment we have had at homes —-sitting together in TV-Lounges , One time/place to sit and eat together no friends/outings in late night, but this fast life where people are to avail luxurious lifestyle parents themselves arrange separate rooms equipped with individual TV, personal Computer with high speed Internet connection and a latest model of any famous brand of Mobile handset though its of no use to them at around certain age , these parents are equally responsible they should be responsible they should keep eye on their children’s activities, what kind a friends they are making how they are progressing academically how they are spending time. The youth is less responsible than their parents is what I think, they are availing what they have in their access and they have no one over them to restrict or make them understand what is good to go for and what is wrong to avail. The generation gap between parents and children’s is not the main issue because its more than the gap, its about basics of raising good children. True that bad habits or friendships existed before this direct and private source of communication too but its all starts right from your basic education that our youth is getting at Home. So the message goes to parents: make your kids to avail good morals and talk to them on every matter to give them better understandings of what is right and what is wrong. ( I am shahbaz atish I read Sociology I want to criticize 2 points which is mainly describe hasten I said our parent are not responsible but they can’t monitor their children all the time being my thought I recommended that personality making and the learning age is early childhood b/c whatever you learn in this age it helps you in development your personality, habit, like, dislike and so on unluckily our parents doesn’t socialize properly their children in that age mostly parents prevent their children in adult age so in the consequence children become frustrate because they had develop our personality, habits, like, dislike in that age which is too much difficult to change if the parents properly monitor in that age so there will be no need to monitor them all the time in adulthood they will be able to distinguish in good and bad and will be adopt the good things and cellular companies and our media are also responsible for this because companies providing such kind of stupid services packages and media whatever print or electronic advertising these packages with the concept of girls and boys friendship which is totally western and Indian culture the major cause of this trend are media and parents media ruin young generation trough wrong concept advertising and parents trough lack of socialization )
The Mobile phone companies are acting the same. They are just making our youth addicted to such things such as romantic sms, prank calling, opposite sex friendships and ultimately to phone sex. You might can not see the impact it has made to our society but everyone else can see it. And For your information Youth are very sensitive beings, they can not understand the right and wrong better than the elders its best for them to learn from their elders not from their own experiences. I think (THE MOST STUPID PERSON IS ONE WHO LEARNS FROM HIS OWN EXPERIENCE, BUT THE SENSIBLE PEOPLE ALWAYS LEARN FROM OTHER’S EXPERIENCES. AND IF YOU ARE THAT KIND OF STUPID AND WANT TO LEARN AT YOUR OWN THEN GO AHEAD DROP YOURSELF IN A WELL AND BREAK YOUR LEGS AND THEN LEARN THAT JUMPING INTO A WELL WILL BREAK LEGS.) Actually 2002 Musharaf has played a very important role of creating Moderate Muslims like you, and you seem to be his fine product. ( ROSHAN KHAYAL ) This is true. these late night packages are effecting badly on the health of our youth and they are living in fancy world of night packages and spoiling their selves. ( According to Hyderabad university ). this is the major source which has left our country behind in every field youth is the real power of a country and they say if u want to ruin sum state ruin it’s students coz they are it’s future in Pakistan it seems like everything is going pre planned you see media , here students better know Hindi rather then Urdu they are adopting Hindi culture very rapidly next comes internet , the great source of students to kill their time in other activities my opinion is this there shouldn’t be any mobile for students coz on internet they might will learn something but on mobile there isn’t any possibility Quaid-e-Azam did allot efforts for this country we just can’t see her ruining like this in front of our eyes with our own hands if we can’t help it we should at least not take apart in it.
I think that the problem lies in the call rates. Most kids sign up for the SMS packages which basically lets them replace calling with SMS. As a result, for every tiny single detail that could probably be solved without 4 dozen parties is notified of the event. As a result, it’s just amusing and interesting to stay in constant touch. If SMS rates were fixed at 3 Rs. per SMS regardless of whatever package you selected, you’d automatically eliminate the half-hearted users of these packages. Now you’re left with hardcore talkers that have nothing better to do. Best thing is that make the plans only available on post-paid connections with parental approval with call and bill history sent to home address on the NIC. If that doesn’t stop them, then nothing will and you have to let those people go. At this point companies have to take a proactive step and parents need to monitor how much time their kids spend on their phones. Personally speaking, my phone is not on my bedside stand, rather it’s in the lounge where anyone can access it. Discourages most frivolous SMSs and calls since my parents or siblings can pick up the phone. And yes, if you truly do have a hectic day, the last thing you want anyone to do is to call or SMS. I’ve had to tell many friends to stop sending me pointless SMSs and only call if you need to talk more than a minute. Works like a charm for now.
I have made some good points. The service provider cannot be blamed for the manner in which service is used. The responsibility lies with the end user. And yes, parents can only do so much
Having said that, the phone companies should be sensitive to what is going on. I think awareness and education can benefit everyone … parents, youth and the society in general. I also feel that having too much free time is part of the problem. If your day is full of work/study (say from 8am-8pm) then how can you stay up all night? But I seriously speaking, if someone offers a service for usage, it’s the responsibility of the purchaser to maintain a strong sense of control and limitation, not the one providing the service. If telecom companies offer late night packages, so be it. It’s their prerogative as a business entity to pursue whatever means of profit making they can. If the users themselves can’t control their usage or habits, don’t hold the telecom companies responsible, the users should have some form of limitation or habit as to what is acceptable and what isn’t. Likening this logic to another example, car manufacturers shouldn’t build cars because people have car accidents and drivers may die in them. Faulty logic applied in this particular article as well. People abuse the facilities they are given because they have little self control and a lack of guidance. If they have to spend all night talking to their friends using a late night package to complete an assignment or project, would that be as equally as bad? I personally don’t think so. It’s a tool to get things done, if you have little self control, then don’t use the service. With regards to blaming the parents in this article, I believe there is some validity but frankly speaking, you live and you learn. Your parents will not be around all the time to help you make decisions or tell what is right or wrong. The inherent process of learning and morality comes directly from experience. When you do bad stuff, bad stuff happens to you and you learn not to do it again. Someone telling you something is morally wrong has the same effect of throwing gasoline on a burning fire. It rarely ever works. Nice try but I missing some logic here and there. I agree somehow here. This has ultimately led to phone sex in Pakistan.
Now The Question Arises How It Affects The Youth? Simple, the answer is the excessive use of mobile phones reflects badly on the youth. They waste their time in useless conversations via chatting on cell phones. Mobile phones have changed the culture of networking in the present era. Mobile phone has left impact on almost every field of life but its impact on the students is very deep and multidimensional. It has made the people closer and closer day by day. Due to this it affects the performance of students related to their studies, lowering their grades and productivity. Despite this many students use cell phones for worthwhile causes, such as; students use mobiles so that they can contact their teachers as well as class mates to discuss the issues regarding their academics. They also utilize the mobile phone to share the useful information with their class fellows or to consult dictionary or calculators. It is also helps students by allowing them to use internet on mobiles to get timely information. When the students are stressed out with their studies they can relax by using the music app on cell phones. It can also be used to make the moments memorable by capturing it through the additional feature of cameras. The affects of mobile phone usage are good as well as bad. Usage of mobile phone leads to the wastage of time and money of students.
SMS addiction leading to health problems in youth .
How is this the government's or Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) 's problem if people are dumb enough to not switch of their phones or turn them on silent when going to bed? and how is making sms packages more expensive helping anyone?
That's like saying people are getting into car accidents lets make cars more expensive. Yes awareness is needed but blaming telecom companies and telling them to make their packages expensive is a stupid way of getting our 'youth' to go back to our 'family, cultural, traditional and religious values' and health
in fact, 60 percent of youngsters send and receive over 125 text messages daily to interact with their peer group. State Excessive text messaging is leading to a number of problems for our kids as they are developing problems like insomnia, depression, require of eating, isolation etc. Besides, according to Survey prolonged engagement with such an activity can lead to diseases like brain tumors, infertility etc. a Almost 90 per cent of those interviewed by APP admitted that they sleep with their cell phone lying next to them and thus, keep slightly awake most of the time during their sleep .
I think A majority of respondents admitted that they are often awakened by a phone call or a text message after going to bed and the lack of sleep has affecting their work and progress. Around 80 per cent of youngsters said they check their phones every few seconds to see if they have received any message and due to constant fast typing on cell phone’s keypad, they feel severe Pakistan National Youth Assembly’s President Hanan Ali Abbasi while talking to APP said the immature generation has become addicted to avail these kind a packages. These kinds of portable platform providers are taking away our youth from family, cultural, traditional and religious values and they did not even care about their health, he remarked. He said it is responsibility of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to set certain standards and ask the cellular companies to abide by them to curb this day by day increasing trend which would create big problems for the youth if not address well on time .
Breast Cancer Risk Increases in Women Who Put Cell Phones in Their Bras
How big a risk . According Dr. John West . he spoke with two women who kept cell phones in their bras for five years or more. Both women developed breast cancer in the same place the cell phone rested against their skin. I have breast cancer, but I never kept my cell phone in my bra; I don't know anyone who does. Breast surgeons Dr. John West and Dr. Lisa Bailey, say that there is most likely a link and are warning people to be careful. Both claim there is an increase in male breast cancer from men who keep cell phones in their shirt pockets. The World Health Organization (WHO) agrees with them. If you are keeping your cell phone in your bra or shirt pocket, this is something to pay attention to. Why just a breast cancer link . The wireless companies are denying any link between their products and an increase in cancer. They may have a point. Many people, men and women, keep cell phones in their pants pockets. No links to cancer in the hip bones or genital cancers are attributed to cell phones, so why breast tissue? Maybe breast tissue is more sensitive to changes than the tissue in our thighs and backsides.

The impact of Mobile Phones on our youth
Has there ever been a time when a mobile phone rang only to see 10 different people checking their phones? Mobile phones have had the largest effect on life because they have become a new way of life. Mobile phones were originally intended for staying in touch with friends and family while away from a traditional landline. The idea behind it was that it would give a person freedom of range, allowing them basically to go anywhere and still stay connected. The first mobile phones were big and large and their only function was placing call. Yet throughout the years they have evolved into so much more. Modern day mobile phones are capable of going beyond just placing a phone call. They now possess features including: accessing the internet, sending and receiving photos, downloading music and other files, and playing games and use Bluetooth . these all function is property of mobile phone make them into valuable witnesses that would greatly help authorities solve crime faster.
