A photo has become widely associated with the August 15, 1945 liberation of Korea from Japanese colonial rule.[1]
The location and date of the photo are uncertain and subject to debate. A number of online sources reportedly give conflicting dates of August 15 and August 16, 1945. There are conflicting locations for the photo given, including Seodaemun Prison and Mapo Prison .[1] As of 2024[update], the South Korean National Archives of Korea gives the location of the photo as Mapo Prison.[2]
Several people argue that the photo was taken at Seodaemun Prison based on the placement of buildings visible in an aerial photo of the prison taken 23 days after the liberation.[1] One writer for the Monthly Chosun argued the photo was likely taken on August 16, 1945, based on other contemporary reports that claimed that releases of prisoners happened on that day. The writer also argued that the photo was taken at Seodaemun Prison.[3]
