Quirinus Quirrell is a fictional character in the Harry Potter series created by J.K. Rowling and is the primary antagonist of the first installment, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Quirrell was the Muggle Studies teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry before taking a sabbatical and returning as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in 1991. During his adventures, his body was taken over by Lord Voldemort, who latched himself to Quirrell after learning that he taught at Hogwarts. Voldemort used Quirrell to attempt to obtain Nicholas Flamel's Philosopher's Stone to potentially gain immortality as he was in a weakened state. Quirrell was portrayed in the film adaptation of the book by Ian Hart.
