Ki-Adi-Mundi is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise portrayed by actor Silas Carson in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Mundi was a high-ranknig member of the Jedi Council until his assassination during Order 66. Mundi was voiced by Brian George in the animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.[1]
Concept and creation
[edit]Ki-Adi-Mundi was portrayed in the films by actor Silas Carson, Carson also portrayed Nute Gunray, and had initially auditioned for the role of a fighter pilot. The makeup effects utilised in Attack of the Clones reportedly set off Carson's allergies and caused his skin to break out. Despite this, Carson has stated that the makeup for Mundi was more comfortable than the costume he wore to portray Nute Gunray. Carson spent time in aged care facilities to observe how elderly people move and speak to better encapsulate the feel of the character. On the character's design, Carson stated, "When I first saw the design, I just thought it was amazing, because it incorporates so many different things. To me, he looks part Native American and part European, and he's got a wonderful, wise face. Once I'd seen that design, I had a pretty good idea of what he should be like." In concept art for Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, comcept artist Derek Thompson proposed a version of the character that had lost his left eye and wore a black and gold cape, however this would not be used in the finished product. Mundi stands out in the films as one of the only three Jedi Council members to have a speaking part, with the others being Yoda and Mace Windu. In Attack of the Clones, fans have observed that there is a scene in which Mundi is wielding a green lightsaber, rather than a blue one.[2]
Fictional character biography
[edit]Ki-Adi-Mundi was a member of the Jedi Council. Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn appears before the Council to offer to train Anakin Skywalker, believing the boy is the Chosen One of the Jedi Prophecy. Mundi and the other Council members refuse, but eventually relent after Jinn's death at the hands of Darth Maul, realising that the Sith have returned. The Council allows Obi-Wan Kenobi to train Anakin instead. Mundi and other members of the Council attended a meeting with Chancellor Sheev Palpatine to discuss the number of star systems breaking away from the Galactic Republic to join a Sepratist movement led by Count Dooku, causing the Senate to consider a Military Creation Act. Obi-Wan later reported to Mundi, Yoda and Mace Windu that Bounty Hunter Jango Fett was behind the assassination plots against Queen Padme Amidala of Naboo and had tracked Fett to Geonosis where the Trade Federation was building a droid army. Mundi was one of the many Jedi who were sent to Geonosis to rescue Kenobi, Skywalker and Amidala. A massive battle between the Jedi and droid armies emerged that caused multiple Jedi to be killed. Dooku's forces eventually gained the upper-hand and nearly killed Mundi and other Jedi, but they were rescued by the Clone Army led by Yoda. Yoda attempted to prevent Dooku's escape while Mundi and Windu continued to fight until the Seperatists retreated, marking the beginning of the Clone Wars.
Shortly after the battle, Mundi and Windu discussed their concerns via hologram, and paid tribute to the fallen Jedi. Mundi assigned Windu on a mission to Hissrich, where one of Windu's allies, Prosset Dibs, betrayed them and attempted to assassinate Windu. Mundi berated Dibs and eventually sentenced him to confinement in the Jedi Archives. Mundi, Kenobi and Luminara Unduli later led a Clone Army fleet to retake Geonosis. Mundi, Kenobi and Skywalker were chosen to lead three seperate attacks on one of the primary droid foundries. Though injured, Mundi to fight alongside Skywalker, Kenobi and Skywalker's apprentice, Ashoka Tano and bested all of them in number of kills. Mundi continued to analyse strategies to locating Seperatist leader Poggle the Lesser, who had kidnapped Unduli at the Progate Temple. Mundi stayed behind as Kenobi and Skywalker resuced Unduli and took Poggle prisoner. While taking Poggle back to Coruscant to stand trial, Mundi received a transmission from Windu on Dantooine, where he and his forces had fended off an attack at the cost of numerous casualties, causing them to be in immediate need of medical supplies. Mundi sent Ashoka and Barriss Offee to Dantooine to pick up supplies while Mundi escorted Poggle to Coruscant with Kenobi and Unduli. Skywalker eventually learned that the ship carrying Ashoka and Offee was infected with Geonosian Brain Worms, leading Skywalker to violently interrogate Poggle to learn how to defeat them, earning suspicion from Mundi.
Mundi later discovered that Ashoka had been placed under arrest after allegedly murdering anti-Jedi activist Letta Turmond, who had led an assault on the Jedi Temple, via The Force. The Council received a transmission from Admiral Wilhurff Tarkin who had requested that Tano be expelled from the Jedi Order. Kenobi suggested the Council side with Tano, but Mundi and Windu refused, citing evidence and failure to comply with the Senate. Mundi remained unconvinced of Tano's innocene during her trial, and Tano was formerly expelled from the Jedi Order. A military trial was later held for Tano, but Skywalker intervened, proving that Barris Offee was the true culprit. Following her acquittal, Mundi praised Tano's efforts to prove her innocence, but Tano became disillusioned with the Jedi due to their lack of faith in her, and refused their offer to return.
Mundi was eventually assassinated by his own troops on Mygeeto when Emperor Palpatine executed Order 66, which led to the death of the all Jedi (save for Yoda and Kenobi who survived). Mundi deflected many shots from his own troops, but was eventually overcome and murdered.
Reception
[edit]Ki-Adi-Mundi was one of the only members of the Jedi Council to play an integral role in the Prequel trilogy, alongside Yoda and Mace Windu. Mundi became a fan favourite character, and the character was expanded on significantly in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The character's line "What about the droid attack on the Wookies?" in Revenge of the Sith has become an internet meme.
