The standards are guidelines used by preservationists and people working with historical resources, they are the basis for decisions about the approaches taken with preservation projects but they are not laws.
The Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines (often referred to as "The Standards") Are standards & guidelines in the United States intended to provide professional qualifications and direction on methods and actions covering historic preservation and archeology. The "Standards" are administered by the National Park Service, under the Department of the Interior
There are different kinds of topics covered in the "The Standards" which cover: Standards for Preservation, Standards for Rehabilitation, Standards for Restoration, and Standards for Reconstruction of historical buildings and cultural resources and Standards for Qualification[1] (Individual's required experience in various capacities to perform the registration, identification, evaluation and treatment activities involved with archeological and historical projects).
