Timeline of naval operations during the Croatian War of Independence

The following timline contains events related to the actions of the Croatian and Yugoslav Navy (Croatian: Jugoslavenska ratna mornarica - JRM) during the Croatian War of Independence. Geographically, the majority of these events occured in present-day Croatian territorial waters as well as its coastal and island areas where significant JRM facilities were located.

Events

1991

June

• 9 June – VPO Command orders its subordinate units to prepare drinking water tanks and engine-generators in case of an electricity cut-off. (418)

August

• 25 August – Croatian forces planned on sinking a large merchant vessels near the enterance to the Lora Naval Base in an effort to prevent JRM ships from leaving and being used. The plan was called off, but not before information about it leaked and reached the VPO command. (422)
• 25/26 August – prompted by the events of 25 August, VPO commander admiral Mile Kandić and the majority of the JRM Fleet relocate from the Lora Naval Base to the island of Vis. (421)

September

• 14/15: Croatian Navy seizes its first ship - DJČ.(https://hrvatski-vojnik.hr/prvi-brod-hrvatske-ratne-mornarice/)
• 16 September – JNA personnel surrender the "Objekt 181" facility in Žrnovnica to Croatian forces. The undergroud facility was used to store anti-ship missiles. (425)
• 17 September – the JRM begins enforcing a naval blockade of the entire Croatian coastline. The blockade was initiated in an effort to aid the Knin Corps and the 8th VPS in breaking the siegies of JNA instalations in Zadar, Šibenik and Split. (428)
• 24 September: Josip Vranić KIA in the Kašjuni cove on Marjan becoming the first casualty of the HRM.
• 29 Septemerb: admiral Barović comits suicide.

October

• 2 October – the JNA arrests three JRM officers, among them, viceadmiral Dragoljub Bocinov, the commander of the Lora Naval Base and the MŠC. He is charged for failing to order to open fire on the city of Split, the refusal to arm reserves which arrived from Montenegro, for failing to prevent Croatian forces in mining the enterance to the Lora Naval Base and for conspiring to turn military facilities over to Croatian forces. • 3 October – beggining of the second naval blockade.(428/429)
• 5 October - rear admiral Krsto Đurović is killed in a helicopter crash under mysterious circumstances.

November

• 14 November: the "Kaštela" Tactical Group is dispatched to the Split Channel.

~ 17:30 h – Mukos, which was patrolling the Split Gate was hit with an improvised guided torpedo launched by Croatian naval special forces.

• 15 November: the Battle of the Dalmatian Channels begins:

00:50 h – remaining ships of the "Kaštela" Tactical Group open fire on targets on the islands of Šolta and Brač with no response from Croatian Navy coastal batteries.

01:20 h – the firing stops, only to resume again soon after. HRM coastal batteries return fire in an exchange that lasted until 05:00 h.

06:00 h – commanding officer of Split (VPBR-31) orders fire to be opened on targets in the city of Split.

06:30 h – the attack commences. HRM coastal batteries again return fire.

sometime after 07:00 h – JRM ships turn their attention from the city itself to the positions of the HRM coastal batteries.

~ 08:00 h – with HRM batteries coming closer to hiting one of the vessels, the "Kaštela" TG commanding officers orders a retreat towards Vis. Fearing the Split Gates to be mined, a retreat through the
