Life and Career

[edit]

Savoy was born and raised in Magnolia, Arkansas where he began playing drums at the age of two. He first started playing when his father recovered a 1974 Rogers Holiday drum kit from a nearby landfill, a kit that he is still known to play on occasion. Mimicking the drum styling for artists such as Eric Clapton, Van Halen, Foghat, The Eagles, and Foreigner, he quickly began picking up on many different playing styles and rudiments and could easily play along with most artists by the age of four. Being naturally left-handed while learning to play on right-handed kits helped to develop his distinct and peculiar ambidextrous playing style. During his teens he began playing different styles such as jazz and blues. He graduated from Magnolia High School in 2002 and began taking classes at Southern Arkansas University-Tech, where he earned two technical degrees in electronic technology. He played in several bands throughout high school and college and was also a prominent member of his high school drum line. In 2006, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and underwent basic military training at Lackland AFB, Texas, technical training at Keesler AFB, Mississippi, and Sheppard AFB, Texas. After being stationed for six years at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana as an avionics technician on the B-52-H Stratofortress, he was introduced to a local musicians Chris Benefield, Brandon "Cotton" Daniels, and Corey Davis in 2012. The four of them began writing and performing, laying the groundwork for what would eventualy be Life on Ceres. Savoy has cited such artists as Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Billy Cobham, Max Weinberg, and Elvin Jones as well as bands such as Deftones, Stone Temple Pilots, Van Halen, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, and Sunny Day Real Estate as musical influences. As of August 2013, he has taken a short hiatus in order to fulfill his military obligations and is expected to return to music in May 2014.
