Evolutionary considerations

[edit]

Several theories for our susceptibility to autism can be explained in the context of evolutionary medicine.

The imprinted brain theory hypothesizes that autism is a result of amplified paternal imprinting. Over-expression of these genes promotes “selfishness” and an increase in the display of basic survival behaviors, thereby promoting the reproductive success of the father. [1] These behaviors are commonly associated with autistic individuals.[1]
