In considering the way that films are put together, many women film critics have pointed to the "male gaze" that predominates in Hollywood film-making. Laura Mulvey's states "In their traditional exhibitionist role women are simultaneously looked at and displayed, with their appearance coded for strong visual and erotic impact so that they can be said to connote to-be-looked-at-ness,". Additionally, the sexual objectification of women in film has a serious effect on girls and young women. Research shows that when girls had extended exposure to films in which female super heroes were dressed in over sexual costumes, they became more aware of their own body competence. Also, the exposure impacted their view of the female gender and female roles. Such over-sexualization in popular Hollywood films takes away from girl's self-esteem and encourages them to want to change their bodies to look more like the actresses in films and media. Even in today's world where we realize that theses women are mostly photo altered or some how enhanced, we still believe they have the perfect image. Film and social media today show an idea of female beauty based on features closely resembling those of women of European origin, which is nearly impossible for a black girl to attain, or indeed any young girl. The perfect image that movies portray are so hard to aquire.
