Sonia Johnson, singer-songwriter
[edit]Francophone jazz singer Sonia Johnson, from St-Alexis-des-Monts, Mauricie, has an eclectic and surprising career. She holds a Master's degree in Jazz Performance and Composition from the Université de Montréal, and also received a Juno Award for the vocal jazz album of the year, in 2012, for her album Le Carré de nos amours, as well as a nomination in 2014, for the album Triades, a collective with singers Annie Poulin and Charles Biddle Jr. She was also nominated for her two albums at the ADISQ gala, in Quebec.
Over the course of her career, she shares the stage with renowned artists including Vic Vogel, Karen Young, Diane Tell, Jean-Pierre Ferland, Lorraine Desmarais and Ray Anderson. She also works as a composer and lyricist for the works of Toronto jazz artists Laila Biali and Steven Taetz. She is a guest soloist on Vincent Rehel’s Capitaine ivre , as well as a lyricist and soloist on the album Les Malcommodes invitent de Félix Stüssi and Jazz Brésilien by Rodrigo Simoes. With guitarist Stephen Johnson, the singer presents a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald entitled Dialogues Ella & Joe[1], and she collaborates with the Montreal National Jazz Orchestra[2] as arranger and guest soloist. In youth writing, she collaborated on the songwriting of Kalimba, Bill Bestiole and Daniel Coutu’s albums.
