Sitai (Bengali: ¢pa¡C) is headquarters of Sitai Block, and a municipality in Cooch Behar District in the state of West Bengal, India.
Geography
[edit]Sitai is located at 26°08′N 89°28′E / 26.13°N 89.47°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 36 metres (118 feet).
Demographics
[edit]As of 2001[update] India census,[2] Dinhata had a population of 34,303. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Dinhata has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84% and, female literacy is 75%. In Dinhata, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Politics
[edit]Sitai has a notable political history. Hossain Mohammad Ershad, a former President of Bangladesh, had studied in Dinhata High School. His son was born in Sitai and some of his relatives now live there. Kamal Guha, MLA from Forward Block, former agriculture minister of the Government of West Bengal, was from Sitai.
